I located a thick green wire hanging from back of engine. I am trying to find out where it belongs. It is a 2005 Sea Ray Weekender with 5.0l mercuiser

Green wire? More likely then not it's a bonding wire. Look for a grounding buss bar mounted somewhere within the reach of the wire. Should have other green wires attached to the buss

I have looked...I can seem to find it. I believe this wire was connected to another wire with bolt and screw. Its in back of engine and hard to see.

That is highly unlikely and not something the factory would do. How thick is thick? 16 gauge is typical wiring for bilge pump, engine electrics etc. 10 gauge is about double that thickness. I agree that it is a bonding wire. Anything on the boat serviced recently? How big is the ring terminal hole which would dictate the size of the bolt it was attached to. Engine to outdrive wire perhaps.

most bonding wires go from the flywheel housing, outdrive, etc. to the bonding buss bar which is also usually connected to things like the bilge drain, fuel tank, etc.

Thank you, I guess I will look towards the back panel and look for some type of Buss Bar. I don't have the size of the ring terminal, but if I had to guess...I would say it 1/8'' in opening...maybe a little larger.

Will this unattached Green bonding wire cause any engine malfunctions. And does anyone know what it's purpose is? Thank for all replies

Bonding wire (if that's what it is) my guess it is will cause no engine problems. The reason for the bonding wire is
corrosion mitigation

I recently posted a similar question regarding a mystery green wire behind my engine (5.7 Mercruiser ) Mine is coiled, like on a telephone handset and it comes out of a conduit/tubing which houses other wires. The tubing is attached to the inside of the transom and the wire also has a lug on the end, to take a screw/bolt. General consensus is that it's a bonding wire. My original post includes a picture, so you might like to compare?
