Volvo drive identification

I have a 1995 Cobalt 220 with a Volvo 5.8 FSI engine. I do not know what drive is on this boat. It is a duo prop drive and the housing has DP stickers on it. The tag inside the boat on the transom say DP-S, 3868299, 4111518390. I think this is just the transom assembly and not a drive identifier. The drive makes a substantial clunk when going into forward or reverse gear and has a terrible vibration when first throttling up. The vibration is worse (if that's possible) when trimmed all the way down. Once on plane the boat runs smooth with no vibration. I am wondering if this is a bearing problem. I have read a lot about the various VP drives and the bearing types that they use. I need to know the actual drive model so I can research the problem further.

3868299 is a transom assembly Product Number which comes up as seen below when ran here,
http://www.volvopenta.com/volvopenta...on_search.aspx
Technical Data
Product NameTS2-A-AQ-27
Product DesignationTSK DP-S
Part Number3868299
Production Period1994-2009

For your engine I believe there should be a few more letters for the model number after the 5.8FSI, but being a 1995, the letters could either by HU or NC and should look like one of these, http://www.volvopentastore.com/Marin...view_id.765080

More info about that ^ here, http://www.volvopenta.com/volvopenta...odel_name.aspx

For your stern drive there should be a tag on it somewhere such as on the top of the drive towards the bow or on the side someplace,http://www.volvopentastore.com/mall/...enta/help.html

The production number is usually one of the helpful numbers to use when running the number in the first link above.

If you have a look around in the following link under Drives & Transmissions, it may help too, http://www.volvopentastore.com/Engin...--store_id.366

This ID chart may help too, http://www.volvopenta.com/SiteCollec...ec_7745608.pdf

Taking a guess and adding one more 2 at the end comes up with the below info.

Here will be your drive parts catalog,

This one looks to be pretty much the same as the drive parts above just a smaller list it seems, http://www.volvopentastore.com/Mari...on_id.145986669--store_id.366--view_id.765056

Thanks for the information. Would you have any suggestions regarding the problem I am having with the vibration? I have heard two different stories from two mechanics. One says the engine needs to be pulled to replace a bearing that resides in the bell housing and another says that this isn't the case. Also, the clunk is normal when shifting and the other says this should not happen. I had a new shifter and new shift and throttle cables in when I purchased the boat. After what I have read I am wondering if the cable length is incorrect or if the adjustment is not correct. The shifter and cables are Teleflex items which I read were pretty decent parts to use.

Being that you have a single bearing, the engine should not have to come out like the older double bearing system. You should be able to replace it by taking off the upper unit housing like described in post number 14 in the link below.

Below is just some info that talks a little bit about the two designs.

http://forums.iboats.com/forum/engi...-out-drive-aq-260-motor?p=6260788#post6260788

Just an FYI: PDS (primary drive shaft) bearings are within your flywheel cover.... not within the out drive.
If you have a gasoline AQ engine w/ the 290 drive, your PDS will likely be a double bearing unit (i.e., 6007 and 6206 bearing numbers)
If your flywheel cover has a grease port on it at the 12:00 O'clock position, the PDS will be double bearing.
If it's been replaced with a later charcoal gray F/C and w/ no grease port, the PDS will be a single bearing.
NOTE:if double bearing PDS, the engine must be removed in order to change these bearings.
Pull the side engine mount lag bolts, and do not change the height of the stud adjusting nuts (unless need be).
Separate the engine from the flywheel cover, leaving the flywheel cover attached to the transom shield, and you will not disturb the two large rubber cushion rings.
