New prop won't fit. Am I missing something?

Ok, so I have a 98 evinrude 115 currently with a 14x17 prop. I'm putting on a 13.5x15 with hub kit that I bought from a local prop shop.

When I took the old prop off, I did not find a thrust washer at all. So I put the new thrust washer, prop, and aft spacer on and tightened the nut, but I couldn't get even close to getting the but threaded enough to get the cotter pin in. So I took the thrust washer off thinking that there is probably a good reason why the old prop didn't have one on there and I still can't get it threaded enough to get the cotter pin in. In fact, the only way I can get the cotter pin in is without the thrust washer and the aft spacer.

On the old prop and hub kit, the splines stick out beyond the hub, but on the new one, they're recessed a bit. I'm 99% sure it's the right hub as we looked it up in In the catalog

I guess my question is this: do I need the thrust washer and/or spacer? Also, am I missing something here? I don't feel like this should be that difficult.

Thanks in advance

I'm thinking you don't have the hub into the prop far enough. Thought the same as you when I put a new prop on. Just had to tap the hub in a bit more. And yes you do need a thrust washer or else you will damage the leg

Thanks for the reply. When looking at the prop and hub, I'm not sure it can come any further forward. I'll give it a shot though

Do you have the vortex hub?If your trying to put a spacer on the hub just before the nut its not required. On mine its thrust washer, prop and then castle nut ,nothing else other than the cotter pin.

That kit is only for solas props.Hub kits are manufacturer specific.Solas is rbx ,Michigan wheel is vortex.First lets get on the same page with the correct terminology. The very first washer you put on before the prop is called the thrust bushing.the other one just before the castle nut is called a spacer..Depending on exactly what you bought you need a thurst bushing ,prop and hub kit ,some require a spacer some do not.Its also possible that you are trying to use the wrong thrust bushing. At least on my evinrude different brands and different styles of props require different bushings.

Are you sure that prop is for your engine When you get a prop with less pitch, the diameter generally get larger. Yours is smaller. Was the 17 a 3 blade and the 15 a 4 or 5 blade?

Sorry for the late response...Been busy on the water! (Foreshadowing that I did in fact get the prop to work).

I celled the prop shop and even though they were closed, the owner happened to be there after hours. He helped me trouble shoot over the phone and what we found out is that the hub kit came with the wrong thrust washer (too small interior diameter) so it wasn't going all the way on the shaft. He left out a replacement washer and gave me his personal cell # in case I had other problems. I swung by the next morning, picked uop the washer that he left under the doormat, and everything fit together perfectly.

Thanks for the response everyone!
