When my motor is running the tachometer at times can go way up then back down and gives false readings. Is there a sensor I can replace to fix this on the engine?

A lot of times you can get another year or two out of them by using a very small screw driver to move the cylinder selector switch on the back of the tach. Gently rotate the switch back and forth and then set it back to its original setting.

The tach replacement can fix the problem.
Cleaning all the connectors between the motor and the tach can also help.
Spray the connectors with WD and plug and unplug them.
