How Do You Get Bird Crap Off Canvas?

My Maxum 2700 has been in a slip at the harbor for a couple months now and I am convinced there are pterodactyls in the area. I am finding enormous piles of bird crap on my bimini (Sunbrella material) and a few other areas of my canvas. Some have baked quite a bit due to the fact that I could not see them (top of bimini is pretty high). I can't get them off with anything. Chunks will come off with a hose, but most will not budge with water and normal cleaners and boat washing soap. When I am lucky enough to remove most of one, it leaves a nice white stain. Does anyone know how I can get rid of this stuff and the stains?

I would try removing the canvas and soaking it in a 5-gallon bucket with warm water to soften the crap. then from there a good strong rinse, maybe a soft scrub brush. I have washed my bimini and boat covers then had to re-water proof.

you could use a garden sprayer, some liquid laundry detergent and a small scrub brush, then rinse. you may still have to re-water proof.

How Do You Get Bird Crap Off Canvas? 12 gauge shotgun!

Oh you want to know how to get it off the canvas, not how to keep from getting it on the canvas.

The real problem with bird crap and such things is the chemicals involved. Birds don't have abilities to pee, so to speak, and therefore their droppings are a combination of fecal matter and urine or more precise uric acid. So there is a pretty good chance that the uric acid kind of bleaches the canvas and that could account for the white spots remaining. If they won't wash out with a good quality detergent, you may just have to put up with it. I know if you leave bird droppings on a vehicle finish long enough it does etch into the finish. So canvas could work the same with the uric acid from them. If you do manage to remove the majority of the spots, maybe use a good Scotch Guard type spray to help avoid future issues. :noidea:

Just so you know...if you apply Scoth Guard or other silicone based products on Sunbrella, you void their warranty. Scotch Guard will also make your top get dirtier faster and cause stains from anything oily like sun tan lotion, barbecue smoke... to become fixed.

The only product you should be using on Sunbrella is 303 fabric guard. That is what Glen Raven recommends.

Read here for their recommendation for bird droppings.

Thanks guys! As suggested, I will remove the canvas and soak/clean per the Sunbrella chart, then protect with the 303. I will let you all know how it goes, including some before and after pictures.
