Got a call from the service shop asking for the model number of my motor. They said the tag had been painted over. I look on the title and it only lists a serial number. Is there any other way to find the model number of the motor? They need the model number to order the correct carb kits for it.

any help is greatly appreciated.

thanks kindly

V4 carb kits cover a very wide range of years and include many parts that aren't required depending on which year. Picture of the motor would get you in the ballpark.

Scrape the paint off the tag? Also should be on the welch plug on the top of the cylinder block - unless the powerhead has been replaced at some point.

Not a very smart outfit if they cant identify the carb type assuming thats all they are looking for. As stated the kits cover a wide range of carbs. Serial numbers dont help much. Provide pics of the carbs and that might help.

I was going to say that, but didn't want to impugn the shop's reputation. That said, so many shops these days don't even want to touch motors that are more than a few years old it's no surprise they can't identify something that looks to be late '80s. My local place says they won't touch anything older than 1995 even though the owner has a mid '70s 140 with jet drive on a bass boat that he says he loves to drive and work on.

Some parts people today are number and computer fixated.Went to a local dealer and asked for a omc throttle cable .No could do unless he had a model number.I had to take him by the hand and show him the used for 30 years omc cable that works on almost every erude and johnny.Yet other parts guys and girls are walking fountains of parts knowledge.

they said the cleaned up the motor a bit and found a secondary label on the starboard head. whatever that means but i'm guess there is a plate on the motor block somewhere.

That would be the welch plug I mentioned...

Just out of morbid curiosity please post back when you get it back from the shop and let us know if they did a good job. It is quite possible that the mechanic could be excellent and someone else there just doesn't know anything without a model # to work with.
