I am having a difficult time identifying where the water comes out of the motor. Can anyone tell me or show me with a pic? I really don't want to ruin this nice outboard as I was my late grandpas.

on my 71 it comes out 6-8 holes centered each side of leg just below mid point 3-4 holes each side to spit water out

Does it push much water out?

Whatever the exhaust just happens to blow out. The rest goes out with the underwater exhaust.

It leaves underwater with the exhaust gases from the outlets at the joint between the gear case assembly and the "leg" or exhaust housing .

You should also see a few droplets, or a mist, blown out of the exhaust back pressure relief ports

there is no telltale on this motor

awesome! So I have some drops spitting out the holes on the leg. Touching the leg and it doesn't get overtly hot. This should be a good indication the the cooling system is cooling adequately right? Also the two dials for low and high speed. How should these be set when going slow and fast?

I think whatever it spits out is a good sign but in reality you should service (replace) the impeller if it's origin is unknown
needles should be GENTLY seated in then...... turned out about 1.25 - 1.5 turns........ start and warn up the engine go full
speed and adjust the lower (HS) needles mid point between flooding( out to much) and starving (in to much)
then adjust the top needle the same way in idle mode . it is better to be a tad to rich than to lean


after making adjustments wait a few minutes for the adjustments to stabilize and visit Leroy's site for lots of info on these oldies

You should be able to touch and maintain brief finger contact with any part of the power head except around the spark plugs and the exhaust manifold cover.
If you cannot , or if a splash of water sizzles and boils or if the paint is discoloured or if it steams from the relief ports its over heating.

Always a good plan to replace the pump impeller if it not been done recently or if you dont know its age.
