Asking Price vs Realistic Value

That and an upgraded engine isn't always going to result in higher resale price. There was an L96 upgrade for about 3K and an LS3 engine upgrade in my boat for about $9K new, the boat already has so much power that it isn't really much of an adder in the resale market except to a select few. Might make the boat sell faster and you might get some more money for it but nothing near the original upgrade cost.

I'm more than willing to pay for the upgraded engine...assuming you can even find the desired boat where someone actually selected it. As a buyer and not a seller, I'm happy to see low option prices on the upgraded engine if you have a seller that thinks NADA is credible. I think a lot of people have your explanation in mind because so few people actually seem to get the upgraded engine. It's five liter city in bowriders from what I see.

In my scenario the difference is between a 350HP MPI 5.7L, 400HP L96 6.0L, or 450HP LS3 6.2L

Big difference when you are throwing in old 5.0L engines or even carb/TBI/early MPI 5.7L engines. In your case I think that 5.7L Merc is only rated at 300 compared with 260 for the 5.0L version

That's right...the 5.7MPI is 300hp which is a big performance difference between the 5.0mpi which is much more popular on medium sized bowriders. Unfortunately the Mercruiser 5.7 MPI topped out at 300hp even up the the present as the 6.2 300hp (ignoring the other 6.2 that has 320hp but is now outdated as the 5.7mpi is) took over with its greater torque. I don't get why the Wakeboard boats get the extra special 5.7 with so much extra power. I get that they are intended to tow but why not offer beefier engines to the other boats. I mean a 450hp LS2 6.2 small block with 450hp is awesome.

The current mercruiser 6.2L is 350 HP

Mercruiser still hasn't embraced any of the modern GDI engines, but I'm sure they will get there eventually. They have never really had the HP numbers that some of the more specialized marinizers have gotten with better intakes and more tuned injection and exhaust systems.

For comparison you have the latest PCM 6.0L GDI engine which is good for 450HP

And the 5.3L GDI with 355HP

Interesting...on the new 6.2, It sort of baffles me but it's offered in a 300hp, a 350 and up to 370 for tow boats. The only 6.2 of the new variety I've seen are the 300 so far. It literally says 300 or whatever hp version it is on the cowel in case the owner forgets apparently.

The difference is in the intake, injection, exhaust system and tune. The tow version likely gets the extra 20 just from the dual much more freely flowing exhaust.

Right...I think the VP 5.7 same years as the mercruiser got an extra 20 but far fewer differences.

Well, that and manufacturers can pretty much claim whatever horsepower they like ;)
Like Sea Doo with their thousand horsepower 3 cylinder engines. Ok that was a slight exaggeration. Of course I hear but have never actually looked that the EPA certification or whatever it is that the manufacturers need to do in CA have to post the real numbers.

The CA numbers are super low for the skiboats I've seen tested (high 200's). No idea though how they are testing in terms of some sort of HP at the prop or if they actually yank the engines and measure power at the crank.

Interesting....they, the industry, haven't measured and advertised crank power since the early 90's or was it late 80's or so. I actually wonder what the crank hp of my 5.7 mpi is? +15% or ?
