Transfer hours from old to new tach

Thanks for viewing this post.

Several years ago I purchased a new boat with a 40 hp Mercury, 3-cylinder EFI engine and installed a new Teleflex 0-6000 rpm tach with hour meter before I started the engine for the first time. It's been working fine until lately and it goes now from 0 to pegged out instantaneously.

While doing some research on the problem I realize I may have bought the wrong tach. It seems I should have bought a 0-7000 rpm tach and I may have ruined the one I have installed, so I'm thinking of replacing the current tack with a 0-7000 rpm tach.

Problem is, I'd like to transfer the hours from the old tach to the new one. Does anyone know if there's a way to do this?

Thanks for looking.

I think if you hooked it up to a 12 volt battery for the right number of hours you'd be there,

Depend how many hours. 1 hour of battery time = 1 hour of run time. 240 hours will take 10 days.

Not worth it, write down the hours from the old tach or use a marker to write the old hours on the back of the new tach.

I know what you mean but why not hook it up and come back in 10 days?
I wouldn't care if the hours were right but it's not that hard if the op wants it.
It's not like you have watch it. Might have to put a trickle charger on the battery.

Hmmm...didn't think of hooking up a battery to it. It's only 56.6 hours so that's not too bad. I could do that during the day, shut it off at night, and repeat the next morning. It would only take a couple of days.

Thanks folks!

Just reverse the battery hook up.

Don't do that!

Monty - 56.6 hours - You don't use the boat enough to worry about it. :D

He could order one direct from the company of his choice, then when placing the order, just tell them what it should say.

Yeah, just a couple of hours on it. Still, I'd like to keep track of the hours accurately.

Sierra says I can hook a frequency generator to it to set the hours, but I don't know what that is or have one of those so I'm going the route of just hooking it to a battery for a the hours. I have three connections on the back of the tach: Send, Gnd, and Ign. Gnd is obvious, but should the other battery lead go to Ign or Send?

Positive will be Ign (ignition). When you hook it up in the boat the Ign lead should go to a source that is only hot when the Ignition is on.

That makes sense. 'Send" is probably for the tach part of the gauge then.

Thanks!

Connecting power will probably only turn the tach on. It may not increase the hour meter reading. Sierra's comment about a freq generator indicates that the "send" wire requires a signal as if the motor were running. A freq generator produces pulses just like the motor ignition. You can try just powering it but the tach may be looking for an ignition signal to see that the motor os actually running.

Thanks, but it looks like in the case of this tach/hourmeter combination, connecting 12V to Ign and Gnd is doing the trick. I just have to leave it connected for a few days.
