Racer you are certainly correct about wanting the 70hp. The issues is that the boat is rated for 50hp and the serial number of the engine will be 70, regardless if there is a jet foot on there or not. That is the conundrum. And factory jets are hard to find in good shape.

The factory evinrude 65 hp jet that uses the v4 90 hp block has a model #of E90J and has hood decals that say 65. There is a post on here about one.

I already asked you if the local regulatory agencies limit the HP to what’s on the CG sticker, if they do you may have a problem, if they don’t, then the HP makes no difference.

Sutor, all I can say about that 56 cu in 50 hp is when it came out it was one of the sweetest running 50' s that I'd seen in a long time. The other 56 cu's sucked.

Ondarvr, I got an answer from my insurance company and the Dept of game and fisheries in VA.
Insurance company said it makes no bearing on whether they will cover me or not. basically she said go for it!!
DGIF had a little more in depth answer. Here is our dialogue:

Me: I was just wondering, I have a 2000 polar Kraft, 1648mv all welded. The transom tag says 50hp. Are there any regulations that prevent me from putting a larger engine on? My insurance already said it doesn't matter to them

DGIF: I you have a capacity plate that reads "50hp" that is what the boat was manufactured to take weight and torque-wise. If you go bigger than the recommendation and were involved in an accident, it could be taken into account by the law enforcement officer on scene which could lead to reckless operations.

Me: Thank you for your answer. The fun part is that a Merc 60 weighs exactly the same as a 50, and I am putting a jet lower unit on it so my actual horsepower would be more like 40hp. How's that for a curveball?

DGIF: The HP that is listed on the tag is what is used. We can't recommend anything different.

Me:
I just want to know plain and simple, is it illegal or not? I understand that you can't advise to do it, but if I get pulled can I get a citation?

DGIF: Basically, if the placard recommends a certain weight, horsepower, or amount of passengers an officer uses that to determine whether the boat is safe. If anything is outside of the parameters, s/he could write the operator for reckless operation.

What they are saying is, which is normal.

The insurance company doesn't care, tell them what it is and you're fine.

There is no law against overpowering, the enforcement is only if you're operating it recklessly, which would be the same with or without the higher HP.

I find this to be the normal answer, which is why people mount much higher HP motors when going to a pump.

Folks simply do not know the simple facts.----The 3 cylinder 70 HP and the 3 cylinder 50 HP are the same parts essentially .----These 2 versions are physically the same size and weigh the same !!!

My '84 3 cylinder 75hp Evinrude was my favorite motor of all time.

High in the 80 's in the day and low in the 60 's at night. Sure beats Northern WI.
