I have a volvo penta 4GL 1999 and I have 5 different wires coming off the old alternator, I hooked it up off the off alternator which is a mando and I replaced it with a new mando wired it right back the way off the old one and it cranks and run but I can shut it back off without pulling off the ignition coil, the key won't kill the power to the engine.

1 orange wire
1 purple wire with a red extension coming off it
1 black wire
1 green
1 purple with a white strip

Please read the Help Tip on top of the page about posting old threads. In this case, over 4 years old.

This is your new thread. What's a 4GL? 4.3GL?

Wiring for 4.3GL for reference;

Make sure the wire that goes to the field connection on the alternator(purple with red extension) is switched by the ignition. This connects to the EXC and S terminals

BTW, the diagram GA_Boater posted does not show the green wire that is connected to the L2 terminal which goes to your fuel pump relay.

It's for a carbed 4.3GL. I had to guess with minimal information.

Yes, in the Volvo service manual they leave that out for some reason in the alternator section. In the full wiring diagram section, they show all connections.

First check that the red purple wire turns on and off with the ignition. It needs to go to the terminal labeled EXC.

There should be a red jumper wire that connects the S terminal to either the EXC or the main output that has the orange wire on it. That is the sense terminal.
