Little help, I'm stuck on the water.

I can't remember ever replacing a float and getting away without adjusting float height. Did the carb kit come with instructions? Many do.

Did the kit have a new needle valve?

I just rebuilt the carb last year, so they are all new components. What would cause it to stick? I'm on shore lol

Howdy,

That amount of fuel flowing through the float valve at anything other than full throttle is going to be the needle valve allowing it. And at part or full throttle you wouldn't see "drips" it would be "atomizing" the fuel (properly)

SO, something is holding the valve open or it's stuck .........or the float is no longer floating!! If that's the case, you may need to replace the float. It's got a hole in it and it's "sinking" and opening the needle valve.

If it's a brass float, you might be able to empty it and solder up the hole. If it's a composite float (and there's a hole in it) , it'll need to be replaced. I wouldn't try to epoxy or hot glue it etc.

If the float is ok, you have a leak someplace else in the carb, possibly a hole in the power valve diaphragm or it's loose etc.....

Cheers,

Rick

Yes it did have a new needle valve, and also a new float. I did not adjust the float , I just put everything back together. I just took the lid off the carburetor , and I noticed that the springy thing that is pressed into the body (right by the float) is seized. I know when I rebuilt this carb, it would press down, and then pop back up. Not sure what it is, it has a spring around it. But I'm wondering if this has something to do with it

Oh, and yes it did come with instruction, but I lost them. I wasn't too worried I figured it was just a matter of pulling the parts out and putting the new ones back in. So I have no idea what the specifications are on the float adjustment I just put the float back on

So after tapping the carburetor, it did not seem to help. But then when I did the cram into gear while in high neutral to get it moving, I got further out in the lake and I had to Throttle Down to grab some trash that fell in the water . It did not stall, and now seems to operate properly

Looks like your piece of crud was dislodged from the needle seat. Would be a good idea to clean it out and verify what others have mentioned now

Can you tell me what that spring thing is that is pressed into the body right next to the float in the center? It used to Spring down and pop back up, now it's seized.

If your talking about parts in item 14, this is the needle seat assembly. If that is the case it needs cleaned out real good and replaced

Now we're getting technical. LOL

The springy thingy is the accelerator pump. Assembly #12 in the diagram AllDodge added to post #27. It should move up and down easily and pop back up.

No that is not it. It is actually part of the carburetor body it is not a serviceable part.

No that's not it. I know what the accelerator pump is, and I know what all the parts are in the carburetor . But this is part of the carburetor body , so it's not listed, nor is it serviceable. I have no idea what it does. But I know it did press down and pop back up . but now it's seized.

When I bought my rebuild kit, I bought it for a mercarb 2 barrel, all the parts were the same, and the schematic on Mercruiser parts.com was the same as mine. I cross-referenced the part number stamped on the bowl to find the rebuild kit

Well I sit corrected, the Merc carb does have one, its just not listed in the exploded view. That part is the power piston and works off of vacuum. If it hangs it needs to be feed up. It should come out but don't pull hard, it can break. If you cannot get it out with gentle pulling and flipping then leave it in and use some brake clean or carb cleaner to try and free it up.

Yes it's definitely hung up. Completely seized. What does it do? Could it be a contributing factor? It def was not seized when I originally took it all apart

Its designed to give the motor more fuel during acceleration. They are not used on many 4 and 6 cylinder motors, more often used on 8's. Without the power piston or other there can be a dead spot above 1/4 throttle. In any case it needs to be freed up.

In the base of the carb there should be a power valve, remove and make sure its clean and moves. A stuck power valve will dump fuel in the carb somewhat like yours is doing
