Before I rip the old stringers up... Should I build a cradle or can I keep it on the trailer??

Well you can use your trailer. But if you have trailer work to do as well, then a cradle is the answer. But even with using the trailer, most iboaters add extra side supports to keep the hull from splaying out as they work inside. A cradle works great because it is easier to climb inside and get out. And I promise you, you will be doing that a ton of time before this is finished. JMHO

My piece of advice on the trailer is, if you do it and have the room, build a ramp up to the boat so you don't have to climb, jump and contortion yourself up. You might even build a ledge the height of the gunnels to lift stuff from/to.

After three years, I'm kind of over it. Hindsight ya know!?!

If I could be sure the hull wouldn't flex when pull stringers I'd leave it but I may just take time to try build cradle

Lower, a cradle doesn't have to be too elaborate. Build something simple and make it low enough to get in and out easily. You will thank yourself over and over. And if you can install casters, all the better. That way you can move it around if need be.

Here is what I did;

Craddle - (10)-M.jpg
I flipped the hull over and made a few bulkheads that fit the shape of the hull. Then jointed them at the side

Then I installed some caster.

And then installed the hull. Of course a also added some side supports and a step setup so I could get in and out with ease.

It doesn't have to be anything amazing, just something to hold the hull in place as you work on it. The side supports added the support you will need to keep the hull sides from splaying out as you work on it. I don't have any great pictures to show of the side supports, but this one shows a little of them;

You can see the side support I bolted on to keep the hull solid. I worked very well.

This is just an idea what you can do. Very cheap and very nice as well. JMHO

It's getting there... It seems pretty solid with the two braces I put in but might add some more. Couldn't do casters and such due to lack of garage space oh well I guess

Lower, I frankly realize your hull presently looks beyond hope. But honestly every rotted boat project on these forums looked the exact same way at the beginning. But once you get going and remove all the crappy junk out and grind it for new materials to be installed, it really starts to look good and gets more encouraging as well. So stick with it, as we will guiding you along, and it will come out great. Promise!

Yes the stringers and the bulkheads are set in PB.and then I filleted them so the fiberglass was easier to go over them. The process is to use PB and install the stringers and bulkheads, then fillet them with PB and smooth them as best you can. Some use a spoon and constantly dipped into Acetone while smoothing the fillets before they cure. Once all that cures, then you apply the strips of 1708 fiberglass and polyester on them and follow up with a second layer a little wider of 1708 and polyester again as well. I can guarantee you, that are there forever. It seals everything in fiberglass and poly. Water isn't going to be an issue either. JMHO

1708 does have CSM stitched on the back. That is how you buy it. The 1708 contains double bias (17 oz) stitched fiberglass material stitched at 45 degrees along with one layer of 3/4 oz CSM. The approximate thickness is ~ 0.044" So that is how you use it.

Low,
You got this, don't worry you will be sitting in your Hull soon enough making puttering noises dreaming away until you are on the water again!!!! i think every restoration has that moment that you ask why you started it, but in the end you will not regret it and get to tell all about the work.
Keep it UP!!!

That is a very correct statement. And it really is amazing how quickly you forget all about the dirty, stinky, itchy work so fast after that segment is finished as well.

Lower, Not sure if this was covered in your boat thread yet, but since you are ready to start the grinding portion of the rebuild, you need a Tyvek suit, gloves, ear protection, eye protection and a very good respirator. I like the 3M 6000 series myself, but others use similar types. Whatever you prefer, but you have to use something. A typical dust mask will not protect you. The very small micro size fiberglass particles will get by the typical dust mask and get into your lungs, you don't want that to happen.

And you certainly will question yourself as to why you decided to do this after you get started and see the mess grinding creates. Most everybody does, but stick with it, it gets way better after the grinding is finished.

Also most everybody, including myself, use a angled grinder with either 36, 40 or 80 grit flapper disks for their grinding. The courser the grit the faster it cuts. So select what you like again. I used the 80 grit to give a smother final finish before installed any new parts. But again, whatever works for you best. And the dust will go everywhere and look like it snowed around you boat.

Take pictures along the way so we can see what you're doing and add any ideas if you have any questions for us as well. Hang with it. :thumb:

Yea I need the suit... I bought the best respirator I could find but I'll double check what it is. I've been resisting the suit but it prob needs to happen. I've been dealing with the itchiness from cutting it out lol
