2006 Mercury 115ELPTO

I am trying to learn about the motor that is on a boat that I am picking up later today, or tomorrow. The owner says it is a 115 Mercury Optimax DFI
I dont see anywhere on the motor that it says optimax anywhere. I did like at the serial number and model number, and the model says 115ELPTO and 2006. How do I know if this is a four stroke, or two stroke, and if it is an optimax etc?

Two stroker has oil "canister" for 2-stroke oil inside. Four stroke has oil inside the engine and should only see oil fill cap somewhere.


Do you have any pictures of that engine? Someone could recognize which one it is from a picture.

I believe that model is a 4 cylinder 2+2 not an optimax. Need to post the serial # to be positive. Or visually look To be sure, the optimax 115 is a 3 cylinder inline motor and the hood is similar to V6. The 2+2 115 hp motor will be an inline 4 cylinder and have a taller skinnier hood. I have no idea why Post 2&4 are talking about 4 strks the 2+2 motors and the Optimax are both 2 strks with the tanks under the hood.

Early to mid 2000s overseas they were marketed for longer. Gotta have the serial #

Start your own thread. You have a 2+2 motor they were made 1989 up to the mid 2000s

I was talking about 4 strokes because he asked how he could tell is the engine four stroke or 2-stroke. I was assuming he had seen the engine.
