having an issue with my 1998 Johnson J90TSLECM . The motor will spin but not crank. it started a couple of weeks ago when after some time on the lake, it wouldn't crank when i tried to load it on the trailer. A couple of days later, i changed the plugs and it started right up. I was preparing to take it out of town so for 3 days i would crank it several times when i got home from work, started every time. Got it down to Fla and headed out, cranked up fine at the ramp and several more times as we moved around. After several moves, went to start it, nothing, just spins. Checked fuel, which is new. Plenty in carb. pulled spark plug, turn motor over, got spark. reseated the lanyard(kill switch), still no go. Let the motor set for about an hour, still wont crank.

any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated

When you say crank do you mean start or run? When you say spin do you mean the engine is being turned over by the starter?

Is the starter turning the motor over at full starting revs, >300?

List your starting procedures, both cold start and warm.

The sticky thread at top of this section has a decent "How to start my motor" section. No offense intended but it would blow your mind how many people do not know how to start correctly.

Are you flooded? Fully advance fast idle and engage starter a few times to clear flood.

Is the starter turning the motor over at full starting revs, >300? YES

List your starting procedures, both cold start and warm.COLD: pump bulb , push throttle forward in neutral, engage choke by pushing key, releasing once engine as fired.
WARM: usually only need to turn key to start

Are you flooded? Fully advance fast idle and engage starter a few times to clear flood. I DON'T BELIEVE SO. BOTH TIMES THIS HAS HAPPENED WAS DURING A WARM START, WHICH I NORMALLY JUST TURN THE KEY OVER WITHOUT CHOKE OR IDLING UP

Intermittant issues can be a bear....

I would test for spark on all four wires while I had issue. If no spark on all test key switch/stop circuit. If no spark on some goto CDI . com and use their trouble shooting guide.

If all have spark then it is compression test and fuel system test time. Compression test might be a good place to start anyways.

good luck...Maybe one of the other guys will chime in here and offer up something. Intermittant is tough, especially over the net....
