Hi I have a 56 evinrude and I took the powerhead apart and replaced some gaskets, now that I'm putting it all back together, the flywheel keeps catching on the stator plate and won't turn freely on it's own, and when I tighten the nut down on the flywheel it won't turn at all. Everything looks fine and for the life of me I can't figure out what's wrong, I'm almost ready to give up on this engine.

Did you replace the coils by chance? They need to be adjusted so the edge of the lamination is exactly even with the ledge on the stator plate, or the flywheel magnet will catch them.

No I didn't replace them, however I did remove one of them because a plug wire pulled out, but I adjusted it back as far as I could so that it wouldn't rub the flywheel.

Revisit the adjusting of that coil. ---It must clear the flywheel.

It does clear the flywheel, I can take the stator plate and press it too the flywheel and turn it easily, but when I mount them both to the powerhead it doesn't turn at all.

Okay so I solved the problem, I just had something on wrong, it was the piece below the ameratior plate, now I have an issue with my placement of the stator plate. I don't know where the little brass plate thats on the front of the stator plate should be situated while the throttle linkage is in the start position.

There is a mark on that brass cam. When the cam roller hits that mark, it should just start to open the carb butterfly. Watch for the linkage to the carb to start to move at that point as you turn the throttle handle. Disregard the "start" position on the handle - they are notoriously inaccurate.
