Been trying to find the sweet spot for setting throttle cable and idle speed and it has been a little difficult to find just the right spot. I have idle screw set at around 800-850 on muffs (2008 3.0L) So when i hook the throttle cable up if i turn the barrel away from the carb too much when i rev up the engine with throttle lever it wont return back to idle without manually pressing on throttle cable but the engine starts great 1 turn of the key. Now if I go back the other way the throttle works great but the engine wont fire without giving it some throttle. I'm i missing something or do I need to play with it a little more? In the manual it mentions preload the cable I understand that but not sure if im doing it correctly? which way do i push the cable end guide and how tight? Thanks

In this direction your preloading the cable, so now adjust the idle screw to increase the rpm. Now if you think there is to much preload, remove the cable and adjust the barrel so it just slides back on with holding the carb closed, then rotate the barrel away one turn and install, this is the preload.

With almost all carbs you need to advance the throttle slightly.
Remove the throttle cable, start engine ,adjust mixture for the highest rpm, adjust idle speed screw for correct rpm, install cable on card, adjust barrel for slight preload tension to close the throttle.

Do not even try to compare starting with fuel injection vs a carb

Thanks. This makes sense now. I did not know I should add rpm after the cable is on. I will try this right away.

Have a new to me 2001 Glastron with Volvo Penta 3.0 liter GSM-A. First sterndrive. Struggling with high and inconsistent idle. Understand concept of pre-load using throttle cable. It appears the Holley marine carb has no exterior throttle return spring and that small spring encircling the throttle shaft itself is fairly light.

If I turn curb idle screw counter clockwise, it does not slow RPM. Have to manually pull hard on the throttle linkage. Suggestions for the marine carb newbe please.

adjust the throttle linkage for a bit more pull to close the throttle

^^^ Agree as Bt mentioned
The throttle cable is used to close the carb. Remove cable off the carb and bracket. adjust carb to idle rpm and hold it closed if necessary while doing. Adjust the throttle cable so it just slides in place on bracket and carb, then turn barrel nut one more turn to help push carb closed
