I have a 1965 Starcraft with a Merc. 120hp.
Last summer i blew one of the two hydraulic lines that lift the drive.
I have replaced the blown hose but now face the challenge of bleeding out the cylinder.
I have the mercruiser manual but i am still not sure what to do.
There is no resevoir that I can see. Only a brass pipe with a cap on the top.
There is only one line off the pump that leads toba junction block under the gimbal. It then seperates into two lines. One for each cylinder.
Can I just crack the line where it meets the cylinder and bleed it there?
Also how do you fill the pump through that pipe?

Thanks

Use a squirt ketchup bottle with some transmission oil into that pipe you mentioned while running the pump in the up direction until the rams are fully extended then let it down and run it up again that should do the job. Use a piece of wire to check the level inside the pipe. If you over fill it the oil will.end up getting into the motor.
I have not seen a set up like you have in 40 years. Stuff like that did not last long down here in the New Orleans area.

Thank you very much for your reply.
Its a very old unit. Not many people are familiar with it.
I will give it a go tomorrow.

Thanka again.

Began to refill and bleed the cylinders. All went well.
Just clamped a larger diameter hose over the pipe and used the same pump i use for filling the outdrive.

However the ATF I was using came up bubblegum pink.
I am not surprised as I expected there to be water inside from when the hose blew.
Need more ATF then will flush it out tomorrow.

Any ideas on how high or where to measure the level?

When transmission fluid gets churned up with air it foams and turns pink. Let it settle down, As for the fill level, try to have it even with the joint where the motor and pump are attached. If you want to replace the oil just remove the hoses on the rams and pump it out. Then re fill.

Do not use ATF in the trim system, it should be 10W30 motor oil

Flushed new fluid through the system. The bubblegum pink is what happens when water mixes with ATF. Seen it happen in radiators often. then used my oil exrractor with a narrow hose down inside the fill pipe to drop fluid to proper level.

Seems to have done the trick.

I know this is old, but since I have a running 1965 thought I would add...
I took the fill top off a gear oil bottle, put it on a plastic water bottle, cut the bottom off the water bottle, trim the gear oil cap down to a thinner tip and push it in the pipe. Now with bottle upside down I fill the clear plastic bottle half way with fluid.
then by myself, I can see it from the helm as I lift the rams in and out (up and down) and can watch the fluid get sucked into the pump and air blown up and out the fluid in the bottle/funnel. Refilling the funnel as needed till complete.
Now after reading this thread, I will be replacing my trans fluid with the proper oil.
