Having trouble aligning my engine. Alignment tool goes into the engine coupler about an inch. Removed engine and same condition. I feel a ridge or line inside the coupler at about the same depth perpendicular to the splines. I did not have any trouble removing the stern drive. I have never done an engine alignment but it seems straight forward enough. I am assuming based on several videos that the alignment tool should go into the engine coupler farther than it is. Any advice is appreciated.

My first thought is there is an issue with the coupler or your alignment tool was made incorrectly. If you have an outside micrometer the coupler dimension should be 1.010 +/- somthing

Not sure what you mean by "same depth perpendicular to the splines" Are you sure the tool is actually going into the coupler or just hitting the sides of it? You can use the alignment tool to 'move' the gimbal around to get a more straight-on entry to the coupler.

I have the engine pulled out enough to try the alignment tool directly into the coupler. Goes in easily about an inch and stops. I can feel a line or ridge inside the coupler that I assume is stopping the alignment tool. I'm assuming the coupler splines should be smooth.

Removed coupler and it does have some internal issues. Thanks for the help.
