I have a 69 river queen, looking for new power. I found a 48ft nautaline houseboat which the owner says is 255hp volvo. not sure on what series the drives are or what engines. I requested pics to identify the engines. I have no got them yet but am still in contact with the owner. Another person whats the hull of the boat to make a play house for their kids. I just want the engines and drives. The boat is a 73 model, does anyone here maybe have any info on what these drives and engines may be?

Not sure there is a Volvo 255hp gasoline engine...but there is a diesel one. Some of the TAMD61 straight 6 turbo Diesel engines came in 255hp. Also 305hp. Superb engines and mega reliable. Widely used commercialy in fishing boats with 10’s thousands of hours on them in 255hp variant. Need to be a serious drive to deal with torque on these. Big big engines.

All i I have on the matter.

With the engine and drive being that old. I'm guessing he meant 255 cubic inches not HP. Which to me makes more sense as its probably a straight 6 cylinder motor.

For the same price of 40 year old and potentially obsolete motors and drive, you can get something much much much newer

I dont think they are straight 6s. I should get pics today, I am guessing they may be SBCs. I should have more info and be able to identify everything. I got chrysler dana drives now so anything is an upgrade.

Ayuh,.... I'm guessin' those supposed Volvo drives are probably also Dana drives, 'n probably 383 Chrysler motors,....

I've got a '69 Nauti-line 34'er, with 318s, 'n Dana drives,...

from the pictures they dont look like danas. I am tired of aquatic rodents eating the boots off my danas.

Could be a VP 255A or 255B. they were paired up with the 280 drives.

as I stated prior, for the price you are paying for them, you can get a 15-20 year old motor and drive - look for free boats with rotten hulls on craigslist.

While the 280 drive is fairly robust and stout, it is old tech with the last one being produced over 30 years ago

I personally would look for dual prop drive for a houseboat.

I must agree that a Dou prop would be the best for a house boat. One thing about the 250-280 Volvo drives, I have had them carried into my shop covered with barnacles, take it apart and the insides look like the day it was built and the oil looks like it was just changed.

Do you work on the Aquamatic drives? I have one and it works just fine, I'm just wondering what I'd do if I had problems.

Thats a neat old boat there NickJeff. Anyone here know of some movers who could haul my boat to my shop and put it up on blocks for me to do some work?
