Didn't we already cover this? Has it happened again? Originally when boat was rigged these needed a amperage reducing relay in the harness near controls. If this is not there the switch burns out pretty quick. They are now NLA.

Jake... This is the first I've heard of a relay needed for the down mode (retired in 1991 due to injury). All of the PT & PTT units that I came across (1960's to 1991) used a solenoid for up mode and a straight through wiring for down mode UNTIL the "Dual Relay" system came into being in 1982. Is this what you're speaking of or am I missing something?

Well Joe, don't know why you have not heard of it...

There was a service bulletin back in '99 I believe. Many control switches on the 4 stroke Suzuki re-branded units were burning up. Granted it was usually the UP side but the solution is a plug in little relay deal that went into the harness.

I don't have the part number any more...

maybe Faztbullet or daselbee remembers.

Suzuki huh? Well, retiring back in 1991 would eliminate me receiving that 1999 bulletin... and during my day, I walked away from anything connected or associated to Suzuki. That explains my absence of knowledge, no need to go any further. Appreciate the reply Jake.

No, Jake, sorry. I have not heard of this relay addition either.

OP, find the TT relays under your electrical panel and locate the DOWN one.....it will have green paint on the studs that hold the wires on the relay. It will also have a large gauge GREEEN wire connected to one of the terminals. Or, it will physically be the middle one of the three round relays. Top one is UP, middle one is DOWN, and bottom one is starter.

Anyway. Get a voltmeter and attach it to the relay pick terminal and ground as you normally would to measure voltage. Then press the down button on the control. You should read +12v, and the relay should pick.

Since you say it works from the side mounted engine switch, the problem has to be in the remote control switch or in the wiring from the switch (harness) back to the engine. There MAY be bullet type connectors where the harness enters and attaches to the engine. Check those bullet connectors if present.
