I've been using my old 5hp Angler with some missing pieces and decided to try locating them to put it all back correctly. The complete detent assembly was missing when I bought it but it's small enough I've been steering it with my hand on the hood and fingers holding the throttle lever. I managed to locate new old stock for the detent, screw and washers but still need the spring (OMC 311337 Spring, Detent).

I could probably find a suitable one from the hardware store but have no idea of the proper length and tension required to make it work properly. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

Other than that it's been the perfect little workhorse on my 1968 Appleby jon boat. - Eric

I scrapped one of those motors a couple years ago. With a lot of luck, I might be able to find the spring in my unorganized stuff.

Well I went through the box of stuff and found a spring, but have no clue as to whether it is correct or not. It is 1/2" diameter X 2" long. PM me with your address if you think it sounds right.

I think you have the wrong part #. Google the following: powerhead group 5602r

#40 is detent spring #312721

Thank you. It's possible that number may supercede the original. I have the original parts catalog from OMC and it clearly states #40 as 311337. I see several places have the 312721 in stock so I'll give it a try. - Eric

Yep, my 1965 book shows 311337, while 1966 book shows 312721. The plastic detent is 311335 in both cases. So, pretty safe to assume they sneaked a part number change in there. Perhaps 311337 turned out to be too weak or too strong??

That's interesting. The change must have been in 1966 then. Mine must have been an early 1966 publication. Although mine is a 1966 catalog, the copyright on it is 1965.
