Hey I'm possibly looking to purchase a 6hp Yamaha used outboard. He's not sure of the age of the engine and was hoping form these pictures that someone might be able to pin point it's approx year. He's asking $650 Canadian for this which comes with a tank and hose. Seems decent, what are your thoughts???

Looks mint, probably only need to change lower leg gear oil and a complete fuel system clean out if stored for long time periods with fuel, carb included.

Happy Boating

I ended up purchasing this motor and it runs great, starts up easily. The compression in both cylinders was basically 130 each.

Another question, I'm looking to get a lower unit gear oil hand pump to help with the gear case oil change. Anyone know what size the bolt hole is? It a 1998 engine.

A marine store would have the pump and an adapter for metric threads.

Thanks I just ordered one off amazon, comes with 2 adapters one for yamaha and the other for Merc, Johnson, Evinrude. If by chance it doesn't fit, I'll just pick up one that fits. Thanks guys.

Walmart has the pump with thread adapters for about $8.....but the one you got is probably going to work fine..I had a 4HP similar to yours and they're great motors. Find the carb drain screw/plug and learn to drain float chamber at end of season to help keep varnish/trash from plugging small jets...very good preventive maintenance....

Okay thanks for the tip I will definitely look into that. If I drain that, is there something I would need to do at the beginning of each boating season? Or does that just literally just get rid of any junk and sludge type build up?

When the carburetor is empty during layup it will stay clean.-----At the beginning of the season you would simply fill the carburetor with the manual pump and go boating.

Hi
firstly, congratulations on buying one of the best engines ever made. And a late model too. Likely 99-03 in age if hood is in original decals.
I have two 8hp of these. Same basic engine. They are so sought after where I live and now command a higher second hand value than the newer 4 stroke 6/8 hp. They actually weigh the same as the new 4stroke 4hp, but have so much more power and torque.

Secondly, you don’t need a gear oil pump. The quicksilver gear oil tubes are designed to fit snuggly into the bottom drain hole, allowing you to squeeze the contents into the gear case and venting out the top hole.

Thanks! Yeah I've had it out in the lake a few times already and it works great, starts first pull everytime! Could have used a 9.9hp, but this will do, especially where it's more for my son to learn on when he's a couple years older. A great starter engine for him. I did end up getting a pump, made things a bit easier. Plus if I can get my old 70hp up and running it will be great for that too.
