Can anyone tell me where I can get a wiring diagram for a 1986 Johnson 25 HP electric start? I have converted a manual start to electric start and the wiring of the neutral safety switch has me puzzled. The top of the switch has two terminals on one metal strip which gives continuity at all times whether in gear or not if wired across the switch. It is the correct switch but a manufacture obsolete item.

My only concern is the correct wiring of the safety switch terminals.

I can find diagrams up to '76 but that model did not seem to have a neutral safety switch.

Thanks
N

Only one wire attaches to that switch !---When in gear the circuit opens to prevent cranking.

I believe the switch uses a metal ground strap. It goes from the switch to the Mounting Screw On Then block. The wire goes to the solenoid and creates a ground for the solenoid.when the switch opens it does not allow the solenoid to ground out.

not sure how complete your conversion is. Where is your neutral safety switch located? It’s typically in the remote box. (Not confusing the safety switch with the stop button in the tiler handle grip, I take it.)

general point would be that the neutral safety switch would be on the positive side of the starter circuit. Current to the starter is broken if the shifter handle is moved out of the neutral detent position. On smaller motors (non-remote electrics) it’s located under the shift handle on the motor.

Neutral safety switch acts as a ground for the solenoid on a tiller model. A remote model is different.

You're quick, FS. Not sure whether the switch on my 9.9s is open or closed when depressing the button (edited out the reference while you were responding). In any case, take your point about the OP's tiller model.

If you 9.9 has a tiller it uses a line amperage neutral safety switch because they use no solenoid. If it has a remote it uses A Low amperage Switch. Anything with a solenoid will use the low amperage neutral safety switch.

Thanks. Didn't know that. Mine would have the line amperage switch.

While I appreciate all the responses--- my only question was "Can anyone tell me where I can get a wiring diagram for a 1986 Johnson 25 HP electric start?"

Only one wire goes to the neutral start switch.-----If it is in neutral that wire goes to ground through the switch.----If motor is in gear there is no ground and then it will not crank.----Simple to wire up !!
