Was out on the boat and the key ignition was working fine as it has been. Then I went to start it and nothing. Made sure it was in neutral. Wiggled the ignition and still nothing. Go back to the motor which has a button for starting and it fired right up.
My logic is the key ignition was shot. So I replaced it with an OEM original and still nothing. Walk to back of boat and hit start and it fires up. Any ideas where to look next? Thanks in advance.

Hm.m.m., remote key start AND button on the motor? I suspect the neutral safety switch on the motor is out of adjustment or faulty. You will see it operated by the vertical shifter interlock that moves when you shift. Simply ground the wire and see if it works then. If so, replace safety switch.

On the other hand, you could have a remote control that has another neutral safety switch inside.

Check the fuse? I suspect the motor side button is wired directly to the solenoid, while the remote hookup has the fuse integrated. The fuse should be in a small rubber boot near the big plug at the motor.

When Chinewalker speaks, I listen! An in-line fuse just about drove me nuts on an old motor. In my case, the fuse was okay but corrosion in the fuse-holder prevented current flow. It's usually the simple stuff. Good luck.

It was in fact the fuse. But now I have wired the new key ignition wrong. As soon as I turn the key on it fires up. My clue it was the fuse was that I had no power to the switch. Now Im hunting a wiring diagram for the key ignition switch. Anyone by chance have one? My manual doesnt show one that I can find. Gotta have 2 wires crossed somewhere.

My manual goes to 78 and apparently the wires changed some for the key ignition:facepalm:
