With a bad whine something it to tight or bearings are going somewhere.

What gear lube are you using in the drive?

High Performance oil. The green expensive stuff. I pump it up from the bottom.

I just noticed that thread reads Alpha 1 Gen 1, its a Gen 2.

I should have drive done and running by Thursday. Going out on the illinois Saturday and Sunday. Mississippi following weekend.

Whereabouts on the Illinois and Mississippi? I was on the Mississippi last weekend (mid-state Illinois) and it was pretty high; some ramps already had their docks pulled. We boated the Illinois the week before (near Havana, IL) and it was up high, too.

Lots of big debris in both rivers; wouldn't want to see your nice new outdrive banged up!

Hard to tell looking at pictures, but what I can see of the bearings don’t look that good. Possible that the lube has been contaminated at some point?

Whine is usually caused by the gear teeth. Might want to get some gear dye and pattern the teeth. I like the yellow stuff from GM. It’s so much easier to see the patterns than the blue stuff from the auto parts store.

are you using the MerCruiser special tools for shimming, backlash and preload?

Illinois will be by Morris not far from Joliet

Mississippi will be up by the quad city’s just south.

Thanks for the warnings! Last year, Mississippi, you could walk on the debris one side to other!

Hey Muc

preload I use borrowed torque wrench. Way better more accurate than any of mine. I use all mercruiser tools. Thanks for all information!

The outdrive truly as 12 tanks of gas from brand new. I change oil every year. Not so sure if I’m just paranoid now. I did her whining and so on. I will be running it in the driveway tomorrow night. 30 minutes then flush. My buddies boat. He’s got a 3 liter alpha1/1 his growling whining you can hear a block away. Been that way for years.
