So I picked up this fabulous little boat recently that I'm working on repairing, knowing there were engine issues. So the outboard has ~30psi of compression in the upper cylinder and about 90psi in the lower, the head gasket shows rather obviously why that is.. but when I took it apart there is this weird scoring on the top and bottom of the lower piston. Now luckily for me that part doesn't touch the cylinder wall but has been making contact with the head, as can be seen in the pictures.

Now I was wondering if I could just file the rough parts of that down or if I really should be replacing the piston/head.

I also was wondering if anyone knew what might have caused that to happen

Thanks

If you are referring to the scoring on the head "bubble", it looks like it was caused by a metal object that fell into the cylinder and got caught between the piston crown and the bubble. It's either that or the head was re-installed off center. There is a little play in aligning the head to the block and this is something you need to be concerned about when you re-install it especially in the vertical where the head tends to slide down a little bit. In the meantime, double check the lower piston to make sure there is no play.

And the other thing is that it could have just happened during your head removal as the scoring for some reasons is still shiny.

Sounds like there is an internal problem in the engine.----Inspect the bearings.

I'm also referring to the matching marks the top of the piston that meets that bubble, I will check and ensure there isn't any play
