i have an alpha one gen two that is making a rattle metal sound in the drive coupler area. noise is intermitent. noise dose not increase with rpm. or in gear. pulled outdrive and started engine to see if noise went away. with engine started with out the drive installed same noise was there but went away after about 30 seconds of idling. could this be a bad coupler? have already replaced u joints and gimble bearing to see if that stopped noise. noise sounds like sand being slowly dropped in a bearing. engine is aligned and splines look good on coupler.

Its probably the exhaust flappers. The old ones were made of metal and had a rubber ring around the edge. Over time the rubber falls off.

To check, disconnect the exhaust boot going to the exhaust pipe and have a look

i will check that but the sound seems to be coming from coupler belhousing area not the exhuast elbow area.

If that's the case then you might have some loose bolts

I bought this boat as a basket case. rebuilt the engine and used existing coupler. i also locktited the nuts holding coupler on crankshaft. I dont no the history of coupler. I am wishing i would of washed grease off of it and closley inspected it. Im wondering if a bad coupler can make noise spininng freely without driveshaft installed?

I can't believe a coupler can make much noise, even with the drive installed. Without the drive, no way unless the bolts are loose connecting it to the flywheel.

the noise is coming from belhousing area. if not the coupler that i locktited and tourqed to spec than what else could it be? I am going to to try and clean spines on coupler and get an inspection camera in thier to closley look at splines.

New starter is interesting, have you wiggled it, maybe bolt(s) have come out some? Correct bolts, etc... good luck!
