Engine cranks but will not start

Im supposed to ask "what am i missing" lol. but yes, that is accurate...im trying to understand if the icm module is bad or not.based on that troubleshooting chartvit would indicate it is, but im not feeling so sure since i normally have spark.

If you have spark, there is no problem.

i would think fuel pump, but if that was issue, id expect it to sputter and stall rather then shutoff. not sure what else to check-running out of avenues.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the ignition modules are work/don't work, not sometimes work

When it breaks down on you, check to see if your getting spark, leave the in line tester hooked up to one of the spark plug wires. if you still see spark, then you know to look elsewhere. also have a can of starting fluid on hand. when it shuts down again, give the carb a shot of fluid. if it starts , you can eliminate the fuel pump as an issue. is your pump mechanical or electric? mechanical pumps either work or dont work,. they are not intermittent.

so now AFTER i replace u joint bellow, the plan is to do as you recommend, leaving the spark tester on/inline. its an electric pump and i never seem to have issue getting it started. what was weird this very last time i took it out, i was only giving a litte throttle and the boat was like standing up -bow high as heck...but it could have been cause trim wasnt all the down...it stopped working, was a loose ground. to me it seems electrical..as if the pump is going or carb issue, i'd expect more of a sputter to stall. thats why i asked about the ICM and if it can sometimes work or if its bad, it will just not start. this is frustrating cause i was hoping it was one of the other common replacement parts...

dumb question, but my boat engine uses a 143 degree thermstat. now what if my boat temp would exceed that? my engine doesnt have the audible alarm option..would the engine shut off? read a post in another forum of a person having a similar , random shut off issues and they replaced the thermo stat even know it wasnt indicating it was overheating and claimed his issue of shutting off went away. when i had my issues the days were 95+ degree hot days.

No overheat shutdowns on any boat engine. That would be dangerous.

More likely during the work to replace the thermostat he disturbed what was really causing the shutdown, and now it's 'gone away'... Possibly a wire shorting on the block or something similar. Because the action of replacing the thermostat 'fixed' the problem, he'll live the rest of his life thinking the thermostat was the cause. :facepalm:

Ok thanks, just wanted to fully understand if there was any correlation between overheat/shutdown, Thanks Chris..maybe once i fix my drive bellow my problem will go away ( all because of the bellow) :joyous:

I had similar problem with starting and turned out to be clogged fuel screen on fuel inlet on carb.

yeah i checked that first...its clean as a whistle. MY issue isnt starting , it just seems to randomly shut off, but only happens under load on lake.
