i am helping a friend convert a 69 25 hp Johnson from short to long shaft. i believe i have everything i need in drive shaft, shift rod extension, housing extension, longer housing bolt, and water tube and the large longer tube that the drive shaft goes through. question is, am i missing anything and how the heck do you get the old water tube out? tried everything including pliers and she wont budge. should i just eat me spinach and pull harder or will i break something?

You need to remove the engine block to get at the tube. Consider adding an extra 5 inches to the existing tube. I done it successfully using large ID fuel hose to join the tube and extension. Must be a rigid connection.

Wrong, it merely pulls out of the upper grommet. Personally, I stick a pair of needle nose pliers up into the tube and twist and pull like my dentist does. You won't break anything, but you will bugger up the lower end of the tube.

Squirt some oil into the grommet before inserting the new one. Should slide right in unless the rubber is petrified.

I really missed something. I thought they made 5" extensions for the water tube.

Sure remember the extensions with some. Maybe early '60s 40s (if so, probably larger diameter).

Sure they did for the 1/2" water tubes as used in the Big Twins. But never saw one for the 3/8" used here. No point, really, since you just pull it out and replace it with a longer one.

Thank you F-R. Old bastards like me sometimes can't always remember everything.
