Well, the cassette deck in my rinker decided it hates me and bit the dust. Grabbed a Kenwood marine head unit and the remote for my side (as I can't stand people in control of my tunes ;) )

Full disclosure, audio is nothing new to me.

As of right now I have one battery, I plan on upgrading to two with a Perko switch. For those that have these, and turn your batteries off when not in use, how do you retain settings in your head units? EQ / Clock / Loudness adjustments? Do you really have to go and reset everything every time you want to go out?

I went with Bluetooth compatiable unit that supports streaming audio.

No remotes to install. Head unit is only used to turn system on and off. Everything else is controlled via my iPhone.

Do you guys think I could wire a small 12v battery backup to the radio to retain the settings? How could I isolate it, and yet still run stereo power from the main battery when using?

The yellow wire from the head is memory power. Get a 9 volt battery connector and battery;

Connect the red wire to the yellow wire and the black to the stereo ground. Plug in the battery, turn on the stereo, do all the settings to your liking and unplug the main radio fuse which is the same as flipping the Perko to off. Put the fuse back in, turn it on and the settings should be unchanged.

But before doing any of the above, does the new Kenwood lose it's settings? My newish radio retains setting because the memory stores the settings without use of 12 volts. The only thing lost is the clock because the clock needs juice to run, everything else is kept even after a winter layover and no battery.

If you install a nine volt alkaline battery for memory retention, better install a diode in the positive lead as that battery will immediately be placed across a very big 12 volt lead acid battery when the perko is switched on. The diode prevents back feeding the alkaline cell.

Who needs a clock when you're on the boat?
Mine just resets but who cares? I have a watch, I only listen to CDs so no need for radio presets.
