1988 Volvo 2.3 starting issue

I just bought a 1988 Bayliner with the Volvo 2.3 penta it wouldnt start when I bought it. Did a little work to it like new battery, new starter, oil change with filter, new gas. And after that it would turn over but I noticed gas leaking from the accelerator pump. I replaced the diaphragm and it fixed the leak. Still won’t start. My first couple attempts after fixing the fuel leak i sprayed some starting fluid in the carb and it almost fired up. But now it seems like there is too much fuel in the carb. Like it’s coming up over the butterfly. Is that normal or is it flooding? I’m new to boats so please forgive my ignorance. I did take the carb apart and the needle valve seems to be operating correctly and the float and all seals were in good shape. Thanks in advance!!

I thought the 88 Bayliners came with OMC's?
The Volvo's are notorious for hard starting.
If you can't get it to start by holding the throttle wide open, try pumping the handle.
It also needs a real hot strong battery.

Is there a way to bypass the kill switch? I can’t start it unless the throttle is in neutral. I pulled the battery last night and put it on the charger. It’s a brand new deep cycle. I did pump the throttle a lot trying to start it so that might be how it flooded. I’ll try again tonight and let you guys know how it goes.

Depending on your throttle model, most have a way to bypass the shifting. try pulling the throttle handle out towards you, thats how mine works. Pump it 2-3 times, open the throttle 1/2, try starting.

No, pull it OUT, like you are trying to pull it off the gunnel.
About 1/2 inch then toward forward.
Your carb most likely needs a REALLY GOOD cleaning, many passageways, but only one adjustment.
Volvos (mine) is real easy to start, a key ingredient for safe boating.

timing may be off if someone fooled around and did not know what they were doing.

Sir, you are a rockstar. I had no idea that did that. It fired right up. Thank you so much. My wife will hate me way less cause of you. Haha. I have seen the throttles that have the release button but had no idea it would pull out like that. Again, thank you.
