Alpha 1 198 drive right rotation on inline 6

Had a different post related to this but I'm going to buy this drive today if it will work. The owner says it's a 198 drive from a v8. When I look online seems like the gear ratio is the same for this drive as was for the inline 6. Was hoping someone could confirm cause I'm getting the drive for a great price of it works and most importantly fits. Please let me know. Thanks.

Ayuh,.... The owner knows nothin',..... 1.98:1 is an I-4 drive,.....

V-8s use the 1.50:1,.....
Yer I-6 should have a 1.84:1, or possibly a 1.65:1 if in a tiny light hull,.....

Just about any motor pushing 160-170 hp uses the 1.65 ratio Your post is not too clear on the "198" meaning . Is the drive from a IL 4 motor 1.98 gear ratio or is it a model 198 mercruiser

Bondo when I look at the chart on the link BT listed looks like the 198 is for the v8. I'm probably missing something.

More info in most cases is always better then less, we all benefit with less confusion. I thought the same thing when reading that 198 meant 1.98 since Alpha 1 was also listed

Agreed. So with the additional information that it is a model 198 according to the chart the gear ratio is 1:62 which I think is what is ideal for my inline 6. Just wanted to make sure that there isn't another issue that would prevent me from using this drive. I can swap the input drive shaft from my bad drive if need be however wasn't sure if that was all I had to consider. I'm sorry I am very new to the I/o scene.

Except for the fact the drive is stamped 1.98 The decimal point says its from a 4 cylinder motor that uses the one point nine eight gear ratio

I see.... My bad... With swapping the input drive shaft... Would 1.98 gears make it a bad buy? More specifically am I going to lose a lot of top end or low end. I'm not into WOT all the time and most times im cruising at 3500 rpm or idling down the intercoastal.

you would be bouncing off the redline all the time. there isnt a prop big enough to make up for it.

Ayuh,...... Exactly,..... The 198 was an MC-1 drive,......
