I have to redo my whole trailer including replacing 2 10 ft 2/6's. Where is the best place to get the carpet? I was at Lowes yesterday and they had some that the salesman said people use at $5.40 a linear ft. I have seen it all over online as well.

Thanks for any help!

There is a place on ebay that sells a number of weights/colors and lengths. That is where I bought mine. Do yourself a favor and replace all the wood. Removing a thousand staples is miserable work.

I have a trailer parts store about 7 miles from my house.

I bought mine online I think it was 8" wide and long rolls so each bunk got a full length with no seams. I agree, replace the wood and hardware.

Thanks for the replies! After taking another look at all the 2/6's and the hardware I am going to follow your advice and get all new boards. The lag screws that hold the brackets are all rusted but all other hardware looks good.

Thanks,
Brian

Hi Guys,

I was looking at the carpet on Amazon. They have an 8 and 12 wide. What is the right one to get to cover 2/6's? I got my boards and some hardware Lowe's was out of some of it.

Thanks,

Brian

You want to staple the carpet on the bottom of the board, so 12".

I have been taking a look at what lag screws to use and have seen where some say use galvanized instead of stainless in treated wood. I thought I would ask here before I get the lag screws.

Thanks again!

Well, the general consensus is not to use treated wood for bunks, especially with aluminum boats. Hopefully someone will chime on on the preferred wood to use.

My trailer has galvanized lag bolts, which have been holding up fine for 23 years.

Just did mine yesterday. Replace the wood and buy BUNK CARPET. Do not substitute. As far as the glue down, I did it but in after sight, it was unnecessary. Got all my treated wood from Lowes even the 16 footers. Be sure not to carpet the whole bunk. Leave the underneath open by at least an inch for drainage

When I replaced my bunks, I asked about using treated wood (either here or on the Clubsearay forums) and was told it would stain the fiberglass. I used Southern Yellow pine, sealed them with Thompson's and then used stainless staples to fasten the new carpet.

I also used stainless steel lags. I often thought about using T-nuts set below the top surface of the board and hex head cap screws Loctited in place instead of lags.

There could be a lot of truth to that KHE..Seeing that I just have aluminum tubes I didn't worry about it. Replaced them twice and never saw any staining. I imagine the quality of carpet has a lot to do with it. I agree with taking caution with fiberglass.

I have the bottom of my Bayliner painted so I do not have to be concerned about staining. I also ordered all new stainless bolts and nuts for attaching the brackets. I was surprised how corroded and hard to get off the old ones were despite being stainless!

I used untreated wood. I also used through bolts that were recessed instead of lag screws which I have seen back out over time.

Got it done on a 93 degree Sunday. It took a friend and I about 3 hours. Thanks for all the help here!

when I replaced my wood- I didn't do carpet- I did that hard plastic stuff- but I have aluminum boat. Its heavy with a 115 merc- and all my stuff plus 30 gal tank, but now, I can literally untrailer it with a little shove. I can pull it on the trailer easily with a rope in my hand---vs having to crank it on- so that stuff is much better than carpet and never wears out. Its probably cheaper too.

Time for me to do this also. Just ordered this bunk carpet based on a recommendation.
As for the glue, I've read a number of articles/posts around the 'net saying that its worth the extra few minutes to glue it down. Seems to me that doing staples every couple inches would be good enough. Has anyone used glue? If you were doing it all over again, would you still glue?
