This season after a few months I noticed a faint lifter sound after initial engine warm up on my 2000 7.4 MPI motor. Mechanic confirmed that what it is. Using 25W-40 Quicksilver Synthetic Blend Oil as always. I recently changed the oil after first hearing sound. Last oil change was in fall. It was done by marina so I don't know what they used. That's why I changed it again. Sound persists. Any recommendations or opinions?

pull valve covers and look at the rocker train

beyond that, you would have to pull the intake to look at the lifters

Try snugging down noisey lifter...if it comes back you either have a stud pulling out or a cam going flat.

Ayuh,..... Are ya lookin' at Diy, or havin' yer mechanic figure it out,.....

Not certain, but I believe the exhaust has to come off to get the valve covers off,.....
Could be a large bill, though it usually ain't to bad of a job, time is a killer, depends on how much Boat is in the way,....
Could be the end of this season,.....

In other words, only you can hear it,....... is it bad enough to tear the motor down,..?? if not, run it til it is,......

GM used cheap , non adjustable, stamped rocker arms. on that motor. Got 502 with same clatter.

Hi. Maybe a shot in the dark. But do you have straight through exhausts with diverter valves to silent option too ?
If so. They can make an alarming noise when in silent mode. I thought I had an engine knock or tick when in silent and it occurs at anything from tick over to about 1400 rpm

Even the regular exhaust with flappers in the Y pipe can make noises that sound like a ticking, tapping or knocking. Get a mechanic's stethoscope and put it on the Y pipe with the engine running at idle, see if you hear it...Flapper noises tend to disappear above idle speed but lifter/cam noises will continue to be heard....

Last week I ran the boat with engine hatch open. Cant hear of idle or underway.

maybe pull the elbows and look at the flappers. if the rubber is melted off the flappers, they will clank and rattle like a lifter

I take another listen but the sound did not seem to emanate from rear of engine.
