Just wondering what is normal. '88 Renken Classic 2000, 4.3L.

I hear the gears briefly, going into both Fwd and Rev. It pulls/pushes back into N easily.

I'm not aware of that on the water, but of course, it's submerged, and I also read here that the ESA shouldn't operate on muffs (which, I didn't detect any rpm change during the shift; they were down a little once in gear however - 500 or so vs a 600-ish idle in N; wasn't really warmed all the way up though).

I'd like to start the boat at least every week or two if not going out with it, and my book (Clymer) says it shouldn't idle too long w/o being put into gear (a lube issue or something).

Don't want to be grinding unnecessarily though...

If your gears are grinding get that shift cable adjusted or you're gearset will hit you hard in the pocketbook.

Make sure you shift it briskly, slow shifting will cause a grind even if everything else is ok. On the water hose you will hear a clank esp if the prop is installed. If it grinds even if you shift it fast, then you are not getting enough travel in the gear that grinds or the cable is getting sticky. Gotta fix that right quick or else you will round off the clutch dogs and it won’t stay in gear.

Ok, that's what I wanted to know, thanks. If I can get back out there this evening, I'll try it again and make sure I'm doing it fast enough, and see if that makes a difference. That was another one of my questions (fast or slow).

UPDATE: I started 'er up and shifted a couple of times, more briskly this time, and it's making just a clink or clank, with no detectable "grind". I feel better now. Just really wanting to make sure I treat the mechanicals right.

Thanks again...
