Im rebuilding 4.3 v6 vortec chevy engine to be able to put it into my boat. I found that the original oil filter adapter had a couple threaded holes for the external oil cooling. Is it the same type of adapter in similar Mercruiser engine or should i just buy a normal oil filter adapter, like in the older engines instead? Thank you

Agree, that is for use with an oil cooler. If your doing a standard build then probably won't need a cooler, so just use the standard adapter. The issue you will run into with the standard design is you need the center threaded piece

This is with the threaded adapter removed

Here pointing the adapter which was removed

No, you either want one of these which should screw into the block (the one in my pic is from a 502, yours is longer), then just use the regular oil filter or remote adapter

https://www.ebay.com/i/252921781438?chn=ps

I'm assuming the fitting is not in the block because of the 2 bolts on each side of the center port fitting. Here is what Summitt supplies but all require the center fitting as in the link above.

They do make one that just uses the same 2 bolts without the center stud, but I'm not so sure I would recommend it

Don't do that, I'm in error, the small block and V6 use something different then the big block. The adapter I listed is what that is in the center of what you have now.

Hey Scott Danforth Bondo maybe some assistance while I dig further

You know when I saw your oil filter adapter I thought automotive and oil cooler lines. After looking deeper, the same thing you have was also used as part of the older remote oil filter adapter.

The one which came on the motor (2002 model) was this one

When looking at your fist adapter it stated it was for SBC 1968 to 1986. I am finding that the standard 305-350 is what is used for the V6. SO if you want to just place the filter on the block, then the adapter should do that

AllDodge , thank you very much buddy for looking it up, i really appreciate this. I also noticed that 305-350 marking on the adapter, but the seller said that it also works for 90° v6, which is what my vortec engine is. Ill double check it tomorrow with the mechanic from the machine shop, but looks like it is the right fitting.

it came from either 2002 S-10 or Chevy Blazer. I bought a set of vortec heads for v6 and then the guy asked if I would like a block as well. Bought the whole engine for $100. It was partially taken apart (so im still looking for various bolts) and had a hole in intake manifold, which I replaced with a marine carburated one.

V8 and V6 remote oil filter adaptors are different sizes and not interchangeable. If you'd like to use the one that came with the block, just put a hose in place of where the oil cooler lines were. You can't plug them...

This is not a remote adapter, and the adapter I was going to buy says,
GM 3952302 Chevy Spin-On Oil Filter Adapter, w/By-Pass, w/Bolts, V8/90º V6,
so it is the same for v8 and v6
