installed new 14 x 19p on Mercruiser 3.0L looking to share results

I recently bought my first boat, a 2006 Bayliner 175 (Mercruiser 3.0:L), and the prop that was on it was a bit chewed up so I decided to install a new Turning Point Hustler 4-blade 14" x 19p. Part # 21501930.

I had it out on the lake last week and at WOT I hit 4750 RPM's and GPS reported 37.5mph / 60km/h. 3 adults, 1/2 tank gas.

Since this is my first boat, and first time ever driving one, anyone know if this is as expected?

I'd be curious to hear what others get with their Bayliner 3.0L and selected prop.

well I cant comment on that setup exactly... but you are just in spec for WOT RPM... just to clarify are you loaded or light? if your loaded you might be a little low on pitch... but I suspect that you are lightly loaded so I think you are good.

Perfect!

You're 50 rpm off the top of the range (4400-4800) :thumb: and personally I have no problem with being a little over. Much safer than being a little under! , and you have just the right angle of attack (a far better indicator of propeller selection than 'slip')...

Chris, thanks for posting those results.

One interesting thing about the propeller I installed is its asymmetrical (dual geometry) design where it uses two different blade shapes. Since this is my first boat and I never drove the boat with a stock prop, I don't have any point of comparison, but I wonder if its marketing hype or this unique designed blade really performs as claimed by the manufacturer.

I run the same prop on my Maxum... mine is a 21" behind a 4.3 V6 and I like it a LOT! I do everything with my boat... Fish offshore/inshore with a heavy load (3 people, 32 gal bait tank, 47 gal of fuel, kill bag with 60 lbs of ice and all our gear) as well as tube/ski and it performs well for both uses. (I did build my engine up some... went from 190 HP stock to 267 on the dyno... so prob 240 at the prop)

np... went to a 4bbl carb and a custom cam that was based off of the the stock mercruiser profile... had a friend at schneider cams do it... basically it starts making power from 1800 RPM and bumped up the compression slightly... it will pull 2 people on wake boards up with 5 more people in the boat without problem. it ran good before the rebuild but I felt like I wanted to put a 5.0/5.7 in it... so when I had an issue (my fault) and had to rebuild or replace it I talked to some good friends and called in a few favors and I got the 4.3 rebuilt for about the same as getting a 5.0/5.7 out the door and saved some weight and not having to set it up for the v8 mounts... plus it has some where in between a 5.0/5.7's HP.

Can’t remember the specific rpm but it was around 4600 odd. I have it written somewhere. We were out to gather info to see about a stainless prop.
So seems a little slow to me. Depends on your use I suppose.

I had a similar boat, 2008 Searay Sport 175, with the 3.0L. Came with a Black max 19P 3 blade. I tried several other props but the original seemed to be the best all round. Two people in boat 4800 rpm, 41-42 mph. Could pull 1 slalom skier no problem, 2 adults with double skis, or a couple tubes. Power wise it was always ok pulling, but had a noticeable drop in performance when the boat was loaded with 6 persons (which was very rare). If it matters, I'm at 3000'.
Sounds like you're pretty close.

To be fair it’s not always that quick but certainly always into the 40’s no matter what. Been on loads of similar 17/18ft maxums, Mariah and bayliner with same 3.0 and they all do into the 40’s gps easy. Over mid 40’s is pushing it. Usually always a 21” prop. Black max or laser 2 are the favourites.

ok good info. I just got the boat only had about 4 weekends with it but now have put it away for winter. I'll have to play around with it some more in the spring, it runs pretty good, so if I'm not getting the 40's speed, maybe I'll get compression test done., see what's what.

Buy a compression gauge and do it yourself. It's one of the easiest tests to do. And the cost of a gauge and remote starter switch will be way less than getting someone else to do it... Do a forum search for 'How to compression test' with my username.. all you need to know...

I don’t think you have any mechanical issues. Maybe just that you have a 4 blade (never going to come close to a 3 blade on top speed) and perhaps a little under propped. I would expect to see a 3 blade 21” on that boat all day long. As mentioned. It’s the standard set up for these boats and similar. Tried and tested and perform well. It’s literally like the most common boat and engine combo on the Loch here. Your maxum 1800, bayliner 175/185, Mariah 18 etc etc. All 3.0, alpha and 21” black max. Some guys get great results with a 21” laser 2 but where they gain on top end, the loose on useability when loaded heavy. A few of the guys have had tremendous results with a 21” hi five for water skiing and boarding. Didn’t drop too much too end either compared to the black max. Still into the 40’s no matter who or what on the boat.
Concluding, a 21” black max will see you into the 40’s and mid 40’s genuine gps in the right conditions.

what I might do next spring is buy the 3 blade 21p and throw her on and see what's what. Definitely I knew the 4 blade hustler I put on would be a bit underpropped for the boat and better for hole shot, worse for top speed. etc.

Just to throw in results from my lake test this Sunday for comparison....

Have a 19.5' Sea Sprite bow rider with an 87 3.0 and Alpha One drive and was holding 35 mph on GPS at 4800 rpm with a 14.5x17p 3-blade prop. Just me in the boat (200 lb male), canopy down.

I'm no expert, but I'm thinking on a boat that's a little longer than yours with an old worn out motor, I'm not doing too bad. I think if you're doing 37.5 with several people in the boat that's pretty good in my book.:joyous:
