Maybe he transposed a digit? Maybe 3402? That would be a 1964. As mentioned, the water pump impeller should be replaced before running the motor. No sense taking a chance overheating with an impeller in unknown condition.

how hard is an impeller replacement... Anything I should watch for that would be easy to screw up? I will get started on checking that out as soon as I get the motor running right. It badly needs a gas tank cleaning, mine has rust and other junk in it. I have just been squirting fuel into the intake to see if it will run at all... It runs good!! Old engines last a long time!!

Four bolts hold the lower unit on. Remove them and the lower will drop down. The water pump housing sets on top of the lower unit. 3 bolts hold it on. The impeller is inside. Gas tank is aluminum and doesn't rust. Clean crud out of the tank and replace the filter which screws in above the the shut-off valve. Filter can't be cleaned and must be replaced.

Aluminum, really!! Thats great news... Im very very happy to hear that. The brown stuff in there must just be crud... I will put some mineral spirits in there soon to try and break some of that junk free...

The crud in the tank is almost certainly old gasoline that turned to vanish. It's hard to clean out, maybe try lacquer thinner or carburetor cleaner.

Also, if you're squirting fuel into the carb, be sure to use oil mix (50:1 gas to TWC3 oil), straight gas will destroy the motor

I just had some spirits laying around, if those don't work I will try something else. Don't worry I used 2 stroke gas.. It was 32:1 2 cycle Valvoline motorcycle oil I had laying around, good stuff but not for outboards I know. It was just to get it running. I didnt want to buy outboard oil if the motor didnt run and then id be stuck with it. Now that I know it runs I am planning on some partial synthetic...
