Carry spare points, condenser, rotor, cap, timing light and the tools you need to replace them... Also, if you plan on keeping the points system, invest in a dwell meter... Or an advanced timing light, which has all those functions built in.

Chris....

I will certainly look into this! One thing I found weird tho, I put a timing light on and I don't see any marks on the crank pulley at all. Wanted to check the timing but can't tell with no marks, strange!

If your gap is off ( meaning your dwell is off), your timing will be off.

Verify your dwell, adjust timing

Sounds like it’s not getting a signal to fire. Went through this recently on a friends VP 5.7. After messing with diz caps and coil etc was not getting a spark but coil was good. Narrowed it down to somewhere between the ignition barrel feed wire to the other end at the diz and ignition sensor. It was the later and on his was in the Diz.

Rotate the motor until you see the main cross mark on the damper or a plate above the damper as in pic. Then look real close it, and maybe take some sand paper to it (might have been painted over).

Point gap .016 to .019 and dwell 26 - 31 degrees

Mark101 fixed the no start issue with new points and condenser. I responded to his comment of finding the timing marks that were not answered along with where the points should be set (started with .025)

Mark another point about your motor. I don't think the distributor was changed, think it came that way. Your boat is a 1987, but probably has a 1986 motor which also used points

Not for Merc... (VP maybe)... Merc have been using TB-IV on the SBC since late 1982 (with the advent of the 'R' series). But that distributor did look a lot like a Mallory...

Mark, do you have an engine serial number available? (it'll be 7 digits, probably starting with a 6)

Chris........
