It would foam and bubbles may cause the pressure to drop and come back up. Opening the oil fill cap you might see some foaming if its over filled

Let's see you pre-fill this sucker... :D :D :D

Chris........

Haha.
My filter is like this. I swear to god...I’m certain that the water fairies tighten the crap out it over the course of the season. There is only 1 filter wrench I have that will even think about budging it, no matter how little hand tightening I give it when changed.

WT*! That's just poor breeding. I generally respect Merc. engineering. Apparently this one has never changed engine oil. Or Merc got into engine and bilge cleaning products. What a mess.

It's actually not too bad. Just punch a hole in the filter when you want to change it and the oil drains back into the sump... Not a lot of oil leaks out when you unscrew it... BUT, when you restart after the change, it does take long enough to get oil up into the filter and pressurized for the engine guardian alarm to go off... Then you have to drag the computer out and reset the codes.

That alone would have me replumbing

The reason Merc located the filters there is they keep the whole bobtail package contained for fast rigging of new boats

The issue I see is that Merc DID have an 'upfacing' remote oil filter, it was on a bracket secured by the bolts that hold the port elbow on... Can't see why they didn't keep that one. Easy to 'prefill', no mess when changing... Ah, NOW I see.... It worked. ;)

As far as the oil capacity question, I've seen the same thing, my '88 has never taken as much oil as the book says to read full, even though the OMC/Volvo dipstick tube goes right to the bottom of the oil pan, you can hear the pump suck air when you're done pulling out the oil. I'd say I get about 1/2 qt into the filter (convention mount) and about 3.5 qts into the engine....
