Neutral/Warm up Throttle loose... Regular throttle stiff...

Hey guys,

I have a Morse Incom Throttle box linked to a 1990 Mercury 115 two stroke.

When I pull the throttle out for neutral/warm up, the throttle is easy to operate and smooth. When I use the throttle (per its usual function) it is quite stiff...

Would one stand to reason that one cable of two is bad? I will disconnect the throttle from the outboard side and see if things change... if not, I will need help finding cables for both.

Cheers!

Probably the shift cable since the throttle only is smooth. Does FWD or REV feel better or both are stiff?

BTW - Don't force into REV if the motor isn't running.

But if you go to the trouble of opening the remote for one cable, might as well do both.

The shift cable forward and reverse is stiff... but the warm up cable is smooth.

Not isure if I’m using the correct terminology.

Warm up lever is moving the throttle cable. No connection with shifting.

I mean throttle only, not warm up lever.

Sorry to beat a dead horse... but just so I’m clear.
My throttle box is the one where the throttle lever pulls out and moves as opposed to having a seperate warm up lever I’ve seen others have.

Does my built in warm up lever move the same cables as fwd and rev? If the built warm up lever is smooth, would that suggest the shifter mechanism is what’s stiff and not the cable?

Whether you have a throttle only by pulling it out or a separate warm up lever, they both move the throttle cable, not the shift cable. They are two independent cables.

Thank you, so sorry for all the same questions... so its either the linkage thats sticky on the outboard, the throttle box linkage that is sticky or the cable.

To problem solve I should remove the outboard linkage and try and move the shifter... if its smooth, I can assume its the outboard linkage thats sticky or vice versa?

Are shifter cables universal with different lengths or do they need to match the throttle box and/or outboard model?

Disconnect the shift on the motor and move the shift lever on the control. If it's stiff 99 times out of 100 the cable is worn. While the shift cable is off, try shifting by hand - It may not be all that easy because you're losing the leverage of the shift on the control.

Cables must match both the control and motor.

Ok so I think I’ve opened another can of worms lol Came home today, took the cowling off and inspected the cables and linkages. Everything is greased up, did find some parts where the sheath had worn... But I was curious to see these circular detents? In the shift linkage area. They seem to match specific notches in the throttles throw when pushed forward. It has two specific notches before the throttle moves freely forward... albeit stiffly. What are these “notches” in the throttle for? Warm up locations?

Ya lost me. I think you're feeling the shifting in and out of gear. When the forum is working properly again, some pictures might help.

Thanks GA Boater, I took some pictures but I think what I'll do is take a video of engaging the throttle and maybe from there you'll be able to see and hear what I am talking about. Really appreciate all the help!
