Power Steering pump

So if the resovoir isn't rusty all you need is the pump. Like I said in post 12, it has to be a metric pump, Like a 90 GMC pickup pump. KISS. Good luck with that.

Clean up the old pump, bring it to the parts store, match it up. I know Napa has sierra boat parts, but that pump is just a gm pump.

Spend the $35 and get a complete new pump to drop into your reservoir. If your lost go to Napa

Went to orileys as they had it, checked the threads and they pulled and re installed the pull..the can is fine so I should be good to go..thanks for the direction and patience....I am not a mechanic so I have a zillion questions and over think things....

Yep....could not have gone to a shop with all the stuff I have done myself...

So I found a pump at O'Reiely Auto parts for 59 bucks plus they changed to pulley...the shaft was all a wobbles when I got it out so assume what ever is in there for a bearing toasted- now, did the pump running dry cause this or did I have the belt to tight?? I don't have any way to measure it....I had a hose leak which ran it dry as far as I know.....I would have run it a little bit dry like maybe 45 minutes which I guess is really a pretty long time dry....

running dry for more than 20 seconds will kill the bearing.... at 45 minutes, your lucky the pump is still in one piece.

And the leak was coming from what ?

I replaced the power steering cooler and it was leaking on one of the lines at the cooler...guess I did not get it back on tight...or I crushed the brass by putting in to tight...will have to really watch it when I launch.

So how do I get the can and the pump lined back up? It came apart pretty hard.....are there any alignment marks or something?

the fitting goes out the hole in the back of the can

So you replaced a perfectly good pump ?

For both questions....separating the two was rather hard- my concern is aligning up the hole for the fitting as it goes together as it does not appear I will be able to rotate it once it is in there.....and no, the pulley/shaft rocked back and forth a lot so I was losing fluid out of the that seal...had metal on the magnet also which I assume is what ever was left of the bearing...it was toast.

lube the o-ring with grease, oil or atf.

put a bolt thru the rear mounts of the pump (the ones that goes thru the can), put can in vice jaws resting there, use rubber mallet to tap pump in.

you should almost be able to assemble by hand

10-4, thx will see if I have some longer bolts or will go pick a couple up....worth spending a couple bucks to not mess it up! The can was fine...

Doesn't it have the 2 special bolts with the large thin hex head that hold the 2 parts together ?

You know I'm not sure I recall...there are two through bolts and then the hex pressure relief valve...will have to take a look...to many projects going at the same time!

Yep, you have it right and looks it will go together easily. I need to change out the relief valve.
