Hi guys I’m new to to this so please bear with me. so I’m in need of your help if possible,
I have bought a 20ft cutter speedboat and it has a seized solid 165 inline 6 mercruiser what what I believe to be a pre alpha outdrive. So my question is I have found a American ford inline 6 looks almost identical will this work do you think as a replacement or my other option is a engine swap for possible a v8 but I would need to do glass work to make it fit the mounting positions also I’m guessing with the v8 I would need to change outdrive. Any help on this would be great thanks

The Ford motor will not work

Find a rotten out hull with a good motor and drive and refab yours to fit. GOing from a 6 to a 8 you would probably need a different ratio drive.

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,....... What you have is a Chevy, 250 cid motor,...... Ford won't work,......

To go to a V8, I suggest you go find a rotten donor boat, with the motor, 'n drive you want, 'n Buy it,.......
Then junk it for it's driveline,.....
That way you get ALL the pieces that break the deal on a swap this, 'n that swap,.....
'n you Know that all the bits will work with each other,.....

You should be able to find a good donor barge for, say $ 3500. with an Alpha 1, or maybe even an Alpha, Gen.II,.....

Thanks you both for you quick reply’s you have saved me from buying something that won’t work. But rotten donor boats are harder to come by over in the uk. I’d like to try and save the boat it’s a great looking boat i think it’s from the 60/70s, and haven’t seen any others on the internet

I'm sure chevy 250 motors are scarce as well but if you can find one in a junk yard from preferably a truck it can work for you.

Even more scarce I don’t think there is such thing as a straight 6 Chevy in a english scrap yard lol. As I say I’ve only found someone who’s selling a ford straight 6 out of his American pick up. Can’t find any others anywhere, anyone want to ship one over to me haha 😂

Hi
im in the UK as mentioned. Where are you ?
persinally I’ve never seen one of these engines in the U.K. im aware of only one or two boats that apparently had them in them, but only after finding out there was such a thing by being on here.

What boat is it ? Happy to help if you’re near me.

Hi mate yes I’m right down the south east in Essex, yes I haven’t heard of any over here either but I bought this boat and the engine has completely had it,
its says cutter on the plate but after hours and hours or searching it looks more like a mark twain 20ft v sonic. I think tho only realistic option if it was cost affective to do so it’s to re engine with a v8 but it would mean a lot of work as the whole boat needs restoring as it’s sat for many many years
