...Chris, the purple circled is a points dist spec

Yes it is, and if you look at the top of the column, the other purple circle, you'll see it's for the 229 (3.8L) engine...I also checked the parts catalogue, the very first 262 (4.3L) engines come out of the box with a Thunderbolt distributor.

From the picture it looks like a Delco cap that was used on the inline 6 cylinders?

Looking at the picture, we have the oil pressure sender right next to the distributor, and the throttle cable bracket along the bottom and left side of the picture. That configuration can only be a V engine, so, yes it's a V6.

2 possibilities...

1. The engine isn't a 4.3L, but a 3.8L. Engine serial number will confirm that.
2. Someone (quite stupidly) has dropped a 3.8L distributor into a 4.3L engine, and added an electronic conversion... Stupidly because the 3.8L is an uneven firing engine, the 4.3 is even firing...

At this point an engine serial number becomes very important....

Ok guys my block number is 10066011 which is supposed to be a roller cam 4.3. The boat is an 85 Chaparal so obviously it's been replaced at one time.

being an '85, the motor most likely was a 3.8 that they swapped in a 4.3 later leaving the 3.8 dizzy

the reason I mention this, 1985 was the first year of the 4.3, however boats tend to lag about 6 months because of inventory.

if that is the case, then you have the wrong dizzy in the motor.

229 fires the cylinders like108-132-108-132 you should have, semi-even fire
4.3 fires 120-120-120-120, even fire

The 3.8 dizzy would have long internal tabs for the rotor to fire against, NOT for an even fire engine. It may well "work", but it isn't right.

post a picture of the inside of the distributor cap, the inside of the distributor and then look at the embossment on the side of the block for the serial number.
