Hello guys, this is my firat post. So i recently just got myself a 1980 silverline, it wasn't starting when i first got it. Guy told me it needed a starter, but by troubleshooting it i found out that wasnt the problem. I dont know the name of the part but what i had to do was by pass the ignition switch and run it straight to starter and it workes. The other problem was the ahifter cable was busted inside the sleeve so it wouldnt go into gear, got that replaced. Now the problem is,it seems to be overheating, my next step is to check the water pump on the stern (if thats the correct name) lol. Im new to this boat hobbie. Am i on the right route? Boat wasnt turned on for about 8-9 months. Can you guys help me figure out what kind of motor and outdrive it has

Welcome to the forum, as for the motor we would need a picture. Serial number's on both will be best. You are on the right track for the overheating issue.Yes, the lower "leg" is call the sterndrive or outdrive. If you look under the adult stickies there is a good write-up with nomenclature. What you are checking on the sterndrive is the impeller. That is the first place to look and if that looks good I would check the thermostat. With the jumping issue, it sounds like that solenoid needs to be replaced if i am reading your description right. What do you mean by "pass the ignition switch and run it straight to starter".

Thsnks for the wuick response. That's the best i could do with picture's, it would not let me post original pictures due to size of file was to large. As for the overheating problem how do i take the stern apart to see if i need new water pump?

I believe the cable im telling you we cut was connected to the ignition coil. Everytime i would turn the ignition you would hear a small clicking noise coming from that coil. So we tested each cable till we found the one that got power when we would open the ignition, spliced it and ran it straight to starter.

As for the impellar go to the adult stickies at the top of the page that says for adults only and you will see a write up. It is a simple straight forward job. Just take your time and post questions when you have them. There are also good video's you can find of people explaining it step be step.

If you are having to bypass the ignition coil to get power to starter than replace the coil. You also can jump across the two metal studs and if it turns over its a bad coil. This is what I have always done and do not see a reason you could not do that with your engine to test it but it sounds like you just completely bypassed it by rewiring. Someone will jump in and correct me if I'am wrong about jumping between the posts.

Was it the small lugs on the starter ( about #10 thread ) that you ran a wire to ?

The starter solenoid is typically internal to the starter -- So it seems you may have bypassed your key switch, wiring and most likely a neutral safety switch is also in series with that.

If so you need to trace that ckt and look for 12 volts off the key switch and at back at the engine -- could be a fuse or an open ckt.

Wellcraft classic. Yes i ran the ignition cable straight to the small lug on the starter and now it cranks right up. . im just having trouble with overheating but i dont know what type of outdrive i have to even start looking for any solutions . here are some pictures, are you able to tell just by picture ? Or do i need to open it to get serial number?

You've got an OMC Stringer 800. Someone's painted the drive. On your engine somewhere should be a number on a tag. It'll read something like 990345C 1980. That'll tell you what you have. I'm not sure if that's a hydro-mechanical or full mechanical shift.
