I just picked up a 59' or so johnson seahorse 18. I have a 14 ft aluminum boat that needs a short shaft motor but the one I bought was converted from short shaft to long shaft. What do I need to convert it back to short shaft? Please help.

Likely Drive Shaft, Shift Shaft, Water Tube, are some, but not limited to, what would need changing. Sometimes, extensions were used on the shafts and pipe, but don't count on that.

Easy job if it is a short shaft converted to long, all you normally need to convert it back to short is a short drive shaft and a short brass shift rod connector and a short bolt at the rear of the gearcase. You can cut 5" off the long water tube. Exception: If the converter replaced the shift rod instead of simply using a long shift rod connector you will have to go back to a short shift rod. You have to look to see what's in there. Hopefully, a long connector. They are obvious. Long one is roughly 6' long, short one is roughly a bit more than an inch. If push comes to shove, you can cut exactly 5" off a long shift rod and use a chainsaw file to cut a notch in the end of it. I've done it many times.

I was not saying it is not an easy job... But not everybody has spare driveshafts on hand...He asked what he needed, so I took that as he did not have a short driveshaft..

It is a short converted to a long shaft. With that being said, what do I need to do to convert it back to a short shaft?

It has a the original shift rod with a long connector, but it has a long driveshaft. Can I cut the driveshaft? If not, where can I find one?

Part number 303860, superseded by 325800. That's for 1959. (You said "or so")

They were $6.50 in the 1964 parts book. Enjoy.
