Getting a little more oomph from Johnson 15

Hey Everyone! Long time lurker of iboats, finally purchased my first boat and figured it was best to sign up :)

Super excited. However Im looking to see if there is any way to push a little more out of the little Johnson 15. It's a Johnson 15 2 stroke, tiller steer, pull start.

The boat is a Grumman 14' Deep V hull. Max HP rating is 25hp and max capacity of 900lbs. Being new to boating all together, (I could be wrong) but to me it seems like the boat isn't getting up on plane (maybe someone could shed some light on how I would know for sure). At WOT the motor sounds healthy. I put brand new spark plugs in when I purchased it (old ones didn't look too bad, but noticeably larger gap from wear), the previous owner had drained all the fuel and the boat was in storage for a few years, but the boat is in excellent condition and I could tell the previous owner took care of it. The outboard also has a set of hydrofoils? on it as well though they are pretty pitted and look worn (possibly attempted at being painted once) and I intend to buy a new set (whether that makes a difference or not). The top speed I've seen on GPS is 20km/h (12.5mph for my neighbors below :) ) on a completely calm day with 2 people for load (~380lbs) and 5 gallons of fuel.

I've been looking around watching for a 25hp outboard for sale in my area as that seems like the easiest route for more power but it seems like a lost cause - lots of higher hp outboards (60hp+) in the used market in my area, or lower hp (9-6.6hp) but seems like 25hp is the sweet spot where everyone around here wants to be. Inquired at a few dealers but the price of a new outboard is over double what I paid for the boat/trailer/motor/accessories combo.

I don't expect the thing to be a speed boat by any means, but I'm seeing guys online pushing the same motor to well over double the speed (seen one at 25mph on GPS) on a different hull, and guys on the lake with similar sized boats just fly past me like I'm standing still. Will the deep v hull make that big of a difference with all else being the same? Is it possible I have to play with tilt or motor height, maybe have a prop issue? Or am I just expecting way too much from this little 15?

15 hp is already pretty much the Max that can be gotten from that block, and still have a recreational outboard. I you need more power, an engine designed with more HP is the way to go. That being said, optimizing the setup and minimizing the weight of your existing combination, might yield a bit more speed. Get rid of any unneeded weight/ballast, meaning wife, kids, mother-in-law, especially mother-in-law, are to left ashore. Mistresses and Girlfriends can remain aboard, Proper engine mounting and engine thrust angle(trim) will, as will balancing where the Mistress or Girlfriends sit, contribute to better performance. Correct propping can and will make a difference is it is currently propped too high or too low. That is why the Model # is being asked for. There have been several versions of the 15hp and some have different WOT RPM ranges.

Deep V hull probably harder to plane than flat bottom. Have you verified spark to both cylinders?

If it’s a 1465 Grumman, your 15 should go close to 20mph with your load placed correctly and the tilt pin set so your pushing the thrust at proper angle. Model number will help to tell you what to diagnose..

Run the motor with a test prop to verify power output.-----Is the serial # on the powerhead the same as on the transom bracket ?-----Running a long shaft on a 15" transom ?

Model # of outboard?
Model shown on the transom mount is CJ15RESR. Couldn't find any serial or model on the power head to verify yesterday, but it was also pouring rain so I didnt look very hard to be honest

Both cylinders have spark

1990----Model.-------Run with the test prop to determine power output.------Decals say 15 HP but a 30 year old motor may not put out that power anymore.-------Testing needs to be done.
