Hi all! New member here and have to say this is a great site! I just need some help finding the name of some parts for my 1974 9.9 Johnson. It’s the off center piece that sits on shaft right under flywheel. It broke and wrecked the point arms? If anyone can help me with the proper names of these parts so I can order them it would be greatly appreciated. I have looked at the blowup picture of the top end but cannot find these parts. I will try and post pictures. Thanks again.

Damn I can’t post the pictures I have. Says something about user upload quota.

You need to size your pics to less than 2 mb. If you have Photoshop, resize the image. Else email the pics to yourself and choose a small size. They will view just fine on your post. Pick a 'medium' size pic when you add the attachment.

Ok thanks I’ll try that. Man I feel like such an idiot for asking the names of the parts. Not being able to post pics of it is making it worse. Thanks again!

Look at the BRP parts list and exploded diagrams ........ you'll find the names of the parts and the all important part numbers

http://epc.brp.com/Index.aspx?lang=E...f-147ac8502679

Always quote the full model number when ordering parts ...... and when asking questions on here

The " Off centre" piece I guess is the "cam" which you will find in the diagram and parts list for the crankshaft and piston

The points are the "breaker assemblies" which you will find in the diagram and list for the magneto.

I am surprised that you could not identify these parts from the workshop manual

Right on thanks man! I really appreciate it! I have very limited knowledge about outboards. Slowly trying to learn. Just want to get this old girl back in the water so I can take my boys fishing! Thanks again!! Cheers!

Not wanting to alarm you, but what usually is the cause of a broken cam is over tightening the flywheel nut. Like with an impact wrench. That mashes the flywheel down too far on the tapered shaft and against the cam, which in turn is also forced down too far and POP!!!! If that is what happened, the flywheel is ruined.

A second cause is greasing the tapers in the flywheel and shaft. Too slippery, flywheel goes down too far, same disaster.

Ah crap really? When I got the motor the woodruff key was sheared and the flywheel nut was missing. I grabbed a new key and nut and tightened it down by hand. The woodruff key didn’t seem to sit right and cam was very tight going on but it eventually did. I’ll check the flywheel. Will it be noticeable? Thanks for info.

Considering the added info about the key, that might change things. So at this point, I don't know what the actual cause was.

Well the flywheel looks ok to me. I think the woodruff key was just sticking out too much and when I tightened down the flywheel it broke at the keyway corner.....hopefully. Here’s a pic of the flywheel and the gap it has when in position. I think it’s ok?

No way can I or anybody else judge whether or not the taper is spread by looking at a picture. We are talking about a few thousandths of an inch in diameter. If you install and torque the flywheel (use a torque wrench!) and it breaks a new cam, you will know.

Thanks for the heads up. I guess maybe i’ll try and put cam on first then measure diameter on shaft and inside of flywheel with a caliber. When I put the flywheel on without cam in. The shoulder of the flywheel home sits higher than the shoulder before the threads of the shaft so hopefully it’s still good. Going to order parts tomorrow and hope for the best I guess! I remember reading torque on the flywheel nut is 45 lbs? Is that correct? Thanks all the replies and for sharing your knowledge! Much appreciated! Cheers!
