Spark Plug wire order

Hey guys, this might sound like a dumb question but help me out here. I have a 89 460 king cobra. We were working on sparkplugs and what not and forgot to label each wire once we removed the wire from the distributor cap (they're currently all off).

I do understand the firing order and I know that is absolutely essential. Here's the dumb question. Firing order is 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8. If I start with cylinder 1, can I just put it anywhere on the cap and then just work my way counter clockwise with the others? Or does it matter where my engine currently sits and the position of rotor inside the distributor?

Next time I'll just remove and replace one at a time.

Thanks for the help

No , you need to bring the engine to top dead center on #1 piston , then start from there with the wires

copy that. So when I bring it to TDC it will automatically put the rotor in position 1 too right?

Pull plug #1, insert finger and rotate motor until you feel pressure then continue til timing Mark is at tdc

remove cap and verify position of rotor. Should be pointing at #1 cylinder but that isn't always so depending on who stabbed distributor last but where ever your rotor is pointing is #1 firing position

reinstall cap and put #1 wire on and then follow your firing order
